Utah man charged after ex-wife’s home targeted with fire multiple times

A Utah man is facing serious charges after allegedly launching a string of arson attacks that targeted his ex-wife’s home while her children were inside.

Delmar Barney was arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder and three counts of aggravated arson following a series of fire incidents at his ex-wife's Richfield, Utah home, according to People. The charges stem from multiple alleged attempts to burn down the residence of his ex-wife, Katey Barney, between September 11 and September 22.

Police Chief Trent Lloyd described the situation as miraculous, stating that authorities were "lucky that no one was hurt" despite the serious nature of the attacks. The escalating attacks culminated with the suspect allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail through a bedroom window during the fourth incident. Katey Barney had previously obtained a protective order against her ex-husband, highlighting an existing pattern of concerning behavior.

Initial Fire Incidents Establish Pattern

The alleged arson attempts began on September 11 when the first fire was discovered outside Katey Barney's home in Richfield. Katey was not present during the initial incident, but her children were inside the residence with a babysitter at the time.

"So I called my babysitter who was with my kids," Katey told local media outlets. "I said, 'Can you just go look outside and see if anything's on fire?'" The first fire extinguished itself naturally without causing significant damage.

Following the initial incident, Katey installed security cameras around her property as a precautionary measure. The decision to enhance home security would prove crucial in identifying the suspect and documenting subsequent attacks.

Security Cameras Document Escalating Threats

Days after the first fire, another blaze started outside the home, prompting Katey to contact emergency services. "I got woken up to a big loud bang and heard some scuffling," she recounted to Fox 13, describing the moment she discovered the second fire attempt.

Katey reported smelling gasoline and smoke before seeing the flames and immediately calling 911 for assistance. The presence of gasoline suggested the fires were deliberately set rather than accidental occurrences.

During a third visit, police reported that the suspect appeared to notice the newly installed security cameras and left without starting a fire. However, the temporary deterrent effect of the surveillance equipment would not prevent future attacks.

Molotov Cocktail Attack Represents Dangerous Escalation

On September 22, Delmar Barney allegedly returned for a fourth time and threw a Molotov cocktail directly into Katey's bedroom window. The attack occurred while her children were sleeping inside the home, creating an extremely dangerous situation for all occupants.

The use of a Molotov cocktail represented a significant escalation from the previous outdoor fire attempts. Police Chief Trent Lloyd emphasized the severity of the situation, calling it "a miracle she's okay" given the proximity of the explosive device to sleeping family members.

Court documents revealed that Katey recognized her ex-husband's distinctive walking pattern captured on the security camera footage. This identification became crucial evidence leading to Delmar Barney's arrest and subsequent charges.

Lessons to Learn

This troubling case offers several safety takeaways for individuals navigating complex domestic situations. While no preventative measure can offer complete protection, the following steps can enhance personal safety:

1. Install surveillance equipment early: After the first incident, Katey wisely installed cameras that later played a key role in identifying the suspect. Security footage often becomes invaluable in investigations.

2. Always report suspicious events: Katey’s quick response to strange noises and smells may have helped prevent greater damage or injury. Trusting instincts and immediately calling authorities can be life-saving.

3. Protective orders are a starting point, not a solution: Although legally enforceable, protective orders don’t guarantee safety. Staying alert and taking additional precautions can make a significant difference. Still, no victim should ever be blamed for the actions of an aggressor.

Why This Story Matters

This story is a stark reminder of the real dangers some individuals face following the end of a relationship. Community awareness of such risks is crucial to understanding and preventing intimate partner violence. Law enforcement and public vigilance both play essential roles in protecting vulnerable individuals. Ultimately, resolving violent behavior early can prevent greater tragedies and protect families from long-term harm.

In summary, Delmar Barney was arrested and charged after a month-long string of suspected arson attacks targeting his ex-wife’s home in Richfield, Utah. Authorities say he made four attempts between Sept. 11 and Sept. 22, allegedly culminating in the use of a Molotov cocktail. Surveillance footage and Katey Barney’s statements led to his arrest, and he now faces charges including attempted murder and aggravated arson.
