Turkey's President Erdogan Criticized For Slapping Child In Public Event

An unexpected slap by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan directed towards a young boy at a public ceremony has led to a flurry of online discussions and debates.

Daily Mail reported that during an official event in Rize, Turkey, President Erdogan was captured on video slapping a child for hesitating to kiss his hand.

On July 27, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the opening ceremony of the Aider Plateau Protection and Renewal Project. This event marked an essential milestone in the region’s urbanization efforts, which included distributing keys to new homeowners.

Cultural Expectations Meet Public Relations

During the event, President Erdogan welcomed two young boys to the stage following his address. As part of Turkish custom, Erdogan held out his hand, anticipating the children would kiss it to show respect.

However, one boy paused, unsure of what to do. This brief delay prompted an unexpected reaction from Erdogan, who quickly struck the child. The crowd looked on as the boy, at first shocked, then laughed and proceeded to kiss Erdogan's hand as expected.

After striking the child, Erdogan had the boy kiss his hand, a traditional sign of respect in some cultures. The Turkish leader then gave money to both children and hugged them before they left the stage. These actions might have been intended to smooth over the incident or show kindness following the unexpected slap.

Reactions On Social Media Reveal Divided Opinions

The video footage of the slap quickly spread on social media, sparking a wide range of reactions from users. Some criticized Erdogan's behavior, expressing shock and disgust at his actions.

One user commented, "I wonder how he treats people behind closed doors if he can do that in front of the camera." Another remarked, "That's disgusting from Erdogan."

However, others defended Erdogan's actions, arguing that it is a cultural norm in Turkey to kiss the hand of elders, parents, and grandparents as a sign of respect. They suggested that the child's hesitation warranted a corrective measure.

"Love it. Kissing the hand of your elders, parents, and grandparents is a sign of respect especially in Turkey. If you don't do it you get corrected. Especially at a young age," one user explained.

Erdogan's History Of Similar Incidents And Controversial Statements

This is not the first time President Erdogan has been involved in such incidents. In 2021 and 2022, he faced criticism for slapping children in similar situations.

Erdogan has also made headlines recently for his controversial statements regarding Israel and Palestine. He threatened to invade Israel in support of Palestine, comparing potential actions to previous military interventions in Nagorno-Karabakh and Libya.

We must be very strong so that Israel can't do these things to Palestine. Just as we entered [Nagorno-]Karabakh, just as we entered Libya, we might do the same to them. There is nothing we can't do. We must only be strong.

In response to Erdogan's threats, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz demanded that NATO expel Turkey, while Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders called Erdogan an "Islamofascist" and argued for Turkey's removal from NATO.

Erdogan's Strong Stance Against Israel

Erdogan has a history of making strong statements against Israel and calling for collective action from the Islamic world. He has accused Israel of genocide and posed questions to Muslim nations.

"I have some words to say to the Islamic world: what are you waiting for to take a common decision?" Erdogan said in a previous speech. He has also described Israel as a threat not just to Gaza but to all of humanity, stating, "No state is safe as long as Israel does not follow international law and does not feel bound by international law."

Why This Story Matters

This incident isn’t simply about a moment of lost temper; it indicates broader themes such as the intersection of culture, power dynamics, and youth interaction in public spheres. Such moments provoke necessary conversations on ethical leadership and the legacies we leave for younger generations.

In conclusion, the incident where President Erdogan slapped a child for not kissing his hand has elicited a broad spectrum of reactions, emphasizing the cultural complexities and expectations set upon both leaders and citizens. The dialogue surrounding this event underscores the constant negotiation between tradition and modernity, as well as respect and autonomy.
