Teen boy, 13, shot dead at gas station in front of mother

A 13-year-old boy was senselessly gunned down while waiting for his mother outside a gas station in Pico Rivera, Los Angeles.

According to the Daily Mail, Saith Mendez was killed on August 23 at a 76 Gas Station where his mother, Clara Fabiola, worked the night shift. The young teen was simply waiting outside when the suspect approached him without provocation.

Authorities identified 20-year-old Andres Adan Chavez as the alleged shooter after reviewing security footage from the scene. The suspect was seen exiting a vehicle near the gas pumps before lingering around the station.

Unprovoked Attack Shocks Local Community

Sheriff Robert Luna stated that there was no interaction between Chavez and the victim before the shooting. The suspect allegedly shot Saith in the back before standing over him and continuing to fire his weapon.

Emergency responders rushed to save the teen's life but were unsuccessful in their attempts. The young victim succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident.

Sheriff Luna described the suspect's actions as "cowardly" and labeled Chavez as a "violent individual" with prior criminal history. The authorities immediately launched a manhunt after the suspect fled the scene.

Justice Sought for Grieving Family

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman expressed his commitment to pursuing justice for the grieving family. He emphasized that no mother should have to endure losing a child in such a violent manner.

Pico Rivera Mayor John R. Garcia spoke at a press conference about how the community was devastated by the senseless loss. The family has created a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses.

The authorities revealed that Chavez has a previous conviction for violent assault and likely gang affiliations. His criminal background raised additional concerns about public safety.

Suspect Faces Multiple Charges

Deputies apprehended Chavez on August 29 during a traffic stop in Los Angeles. The suspect is now being held without bond on murder charges.

Prosecutors have added a special circumstance allegation of murder while lying in wait to the charges. Additional charges include possession of an unregistered loaded firearm.

Chavez made his first court appearance on Tuesday, with his arraignment scheduled for September 29. The case continues to draw attention as the community mourns the loss of young Saith Mendez.

Lessons to learn from this tragedy

1. Public spaces can become unexpectedly dangerous. Even routine waiting in safe locations like gas stations can be risky. Remaining aware of surroundings and ensuring children are accompanied as much as possible might help in preventing exposure to harm—though this case proves that tragedies can still occur, even under careful watch.

2. Prior offenders can be unpredictable. Authorities revealed that Chavez had a prior violent assault conviction and might be linked to gangs. This highlights the importance of enforcing strict supervision and legal accountability on repeat violent offenders who pose a risk to communities.

3. Support for grieving families matters. Whether through words, donations, or media attention, assisting victims' families helps them navigate unimaginable loss. Still, it must always be emphasized that no matter the crime, fault lies solely with the perpetrator—not the victim or their loved ones.

Why this story matters

This tragic case is a stark reminder of how violence can touch even the most innocent lives. It underscores the importance of safeguarding public spaces and enforcing serious consequences for repeat violent offenders. The community’s response also serves as an example of standing together in times of grief.

Conclusion

On the evening of Aug. 23, 13-year-old Saith Mendez was fatally shot as he waited for his mother at a Pico Rivera gas station where she worked. Authorities say the attack was entirely unprovoked, with the alleged shooter, 20-year-old Andres Adan Chavez, delivering a deadly assault before fleeing. Chavez, who has a history of violent crime, was arrested days later and now faces murder charges with special circumstances. Community leaders, law enforcement, and grieving family members continue to mourn the unimaginable loss while promising to seek justice for Saith. A GoFundMe has been established to help the Mendez family lay their child to rest, as the town of Pico Rivera mourns and heals.
