Pennsylvania police officer slain in hospital attack; suspect also dead

A tragic shoot-out at a Pennsylvania hospital resulted in the death of a police officer and the gunman, with several others wounded.

A police standoff in UPMC Memorial Hospital left multiple staff injured and two dead, including the assailant, as Fox News reports.

Harrowing Incident Unfolds

The incident unfolded on a brisk Saturday morning around 10:45 a.m. in York, Pennsylvania, when Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, 49, entered the hospital's intensive care unit armed and dangerous. Armed with a semiautomatic weapon and several zip ties, Archangel Ortiz immediately demonstrated his intent by taking a female nurse hostage.

Ted Czech, a police representative, detailed that the department had been alerted to an 'active threat' at the location, which prompted a swift response from law enforcement. Upon arrival, officers found a chaotic scene inside the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The situation escalated quickly, leading to the wounding of a doctor, another nurse, a custodian, and two police officers. Among the responders, West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte was fatally injured while trying to neutralize the threat posed by Archangel Ortiz.

Sad Reflection on Day of Heroism, Tragedy

In response to the violent encounter, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro visited the hospital to meet with the injured and pay respects to Officer Duarte’s family. He commended the bravery of the first responders and medical staff who faced the critical situation head-on.

The West York Borough issued a heartfelt statement through their Facebook page extending "deepest condolences" to the family of Officer Duarte and acknowledging the loss experienced by their community and fellow officers. According to the officials, the immediate area was secured promptly after the assailant was neutralized, ensuring no patients came to harm during the incident.

Adding to the statements of support, newly confirmed FBI Director Kash Patel expressed his condolences via X, recognizing the sacrifice of Officer Duarte and reinforcing the FBI’s readiness to assist local law enforcement agencies during this trying time.

Outpouring of Grief, Solidarity

Hospital spokesperson Susan Manko addressed the media, reassuring the public that the gunman was apprehended and the facility secured without any patient injuries. This statement came amidst rampant concerns about the safety of those within the hospital’s premises during the attack.

The district attorney of York County, Tim Barker, explained the grim details of how the suspect had restrained a nurse and initiated the altercation. This act of aggression was a pivotal point that escalated the incident to a deadly confrontation involving several law enforcement officers.

As the community grapples with the shocking events, law enforcement, and hospital officials continue to piece together the motive and full circumstances surrounding the attack.

This tragic event emphasizes the unpredictable nature of public safety threats and the critical need for efficient crisis response protocols.

It highlights the peril that first responders face daily and the intrinsic value of preparedness and training in possibly saving lives in similar situations.
