Ohio teacher admits to a sexual relationship with her 15-year-old student

A former Columbus, Ohio, high school teacher pleaded guilty to felony charges after authorities discovered she had been carrying on a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student at her school.

Jamelah Daboubi, 28, who taught at Horizon Science Academy in Columbus, entered guilty pleas to gross sexual imposition and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in Franklin County Common Pleas Court, with investigators revealing that she exchanged hundreds of phone calls and thousands of text messages with the teenage boy over a period of months.

Breitbart News reported that the case began on April 2, 2025, when police responded to a residence on Salado Creek Drive in Columbus. A woman who held legal guardianship over her 15-year-old nephew reported that she had caught the teen and one of his 10th-grade teachers in a compromising situation inside the teacher's vehicle. The discovery prompted the guardian to immediately contact law enforcement.

How the Relationship Was Uncovered

According to a statement from the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney, the woman "said she caught her 15-year-old nephew and one of his 10th-grade teachers engaged in sexual contact in the teacher's car." The teen subsequently spoke with responding officers about the nature of his interactions with Daboubi.

The prosecuting attorney's statement continued: "The nephew, whom the woman has guardianship over, admitted to police that he and his teacher had been having a relationship that involved kissing and touching."

The following day, investigators conducted a more detailed interview with the student. During that conversation, the boy revealed that he and Daboubi had been exchanging text messages for approximately two months and that physical contact between them had been occurring over a sustained period. Police seized the teen's phone as evidence.

Thousands of Messages Found on the Teen's Phone

A forensic review of the student's device revealed the staggering scope of communication between Daboubi and her underage student. Investigators found hundreds of calls and thousands of texts exchanged between the two. Among the messages were conversations in which the pair professed romantic feelings for one another.

The case has raised serious concerns about how an adult in a position of authority was able to maintain such extensive secret contact with a minor. Critics argue that this case underscores a troubling pattern across the country in which trusted educators exploit their access to vulnerable young people. The volume of communication discovered on the phone suggests a prolonged grooming effort that went undetected by school officials and family members alike.

Following her arrest in April, Daboubi was terminated from her teaching position at Horizon Science Academy. She was subsequently indicted, and her case moved through the Franklin County court system before she entered her guilty plea, which WBNS reported Saturday based on court filings.

Sentencing Delayed as Court Weighs Options

Daboubi had been scheduled to appear for sentencing in Franklin County Common Pleas Court on Friday, but the hearing was postponed to an unspecified future date. WBNS reported that "the amended charges of gross sexual imposition and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor carry a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison."

However, the court has recommended a considerably lighter outcome. According to the outlet, the recommended sentence includes "five years of community control, continued counseling, surrender of her teaching license, and community service." As a condition of her guilty plea, Daboubi will also be required to register as a sex offender.

The potential for a non-prison sentence in a case involving sustained sexual misconduct with a child has drawn scrutiny. Leading criminologists and researchers have warned that what they call "educator sexual misconduct" has grown rampant across the United States over the past two decades. While cases involving female teachers and male students tend to generate significant media attention, research cited in coverage of this case indicates that male educators account for 89.1 percent of such incidents — though those cases are largely underreported.

Lessons to Learn

1. Guardians and parents should regularly monitor the digital communications of minors in their care. The sheer volume of calls and texts between Daboubi and the student — thousands of messages — suggests that routine checks of a child's phone activity could help identify inappropriate relationships before they escalate to physical contact.

2. Schools must implement robust safeguards that prevent private, unsupervised communication between staff and students. When a teacher can exchange thousands of messages with a student without detection, it reveals a systemic gap in oversight that administrators should urgently address through clear policies and monitoring protocols.

3. Young people should be educated about the boundaries of appropriate relationships with authority figures, and they should feel safe reporting uncomfortable interactions to trusted adults. It is critical to emphasize, however, that no matter what precautions are taken, crime can happen to anyone, and responsibility always lies with the perpetrator — never the victim.

Why This Story Matters

This case matters because it exposes the vulnerability of students who place their trust in the adults tasked with educating and protecting them. It also highlights the urgent need for school districts nationwide to reevaluate how they monitor interactions between faculty and minors. When a teacher exploits her position to prey on a child, it erodes public confidence in the institutions that families depend on most.

In summary, Jamelah Daboubi, a 28-year-old former teacher at Horizon Science Academy in Columbus, Ohio, pleaded guilty to gross sexual imposition and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor after her relationship with a 15-year-old student was discovered by the boy's aunt in April 2025. Investigators found hundreds of calls and thousands of texts on the teen's phone, including messages of affection. Daboubi was fired from her position, and while she faces a maximum of 18 months in prison, the court has recommended community control, counseling, surrender of her teaching license, community service, and mandatory sex-offender registration. Her sentencing has been postponed to a future date that has not yet been announced.
