NYPD hunts suspect who allegedly raped 13-year-old girl in Bronx park

New York City police are searching for a man who allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl inside a Bronx park last week, and they are asking the public for help identifying the suspect, the New York Post reported.

The alleged attack took place on the evening of June 20 in Crotona Park, a 127-acre green space in the heart of the Bronx. The girl told police that an unknown man approached her, forced her into a secluded area of the park, and sexually assaulted her. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation following the incident.

The NYPD's Special Victims Division is leading the investigation. Detectives have released a surveillance image of the suspect, described as a male with a medium build, approximately 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, last seen wearing a dark-colored hoodie and jeans. Police have urged anyone who recognizes the individual to contact the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.

A child targeted in a public park

The alleged assault occurred around 8:30 p.m., a time when parks across the city still see foot traffic from joggers, families, and residents. That a 13-year-old girl was allegedly attacked in such a setting has drawn sharp concern from residents and local officials.

Crotona Park, bordered by residential neighborhoods in the East Bronx, has long served as a community gathering space. The alleged crime has renewed questions about safety in New York City's public parks, particularly for minors.

No arrest has been made as of this writing. Investigators have not publicly confirmed whether they have recovered physical evidence from the scene or whether any forensic testing is underway. The NYPD has not disclosed whether surveillance footage from nearby businesses or city cameras captured the suspect before or after the alleged attack.

NYPD appeals to the public

The department's decision to release a surveillance image signals that investigators believe public tips may be critical to identifying the suspect. Crime Stoppers tips can be submitted anonymously, and the program offers cash rewards of up to $3,500 for information that leads to an arrest and indictment.

The case is one of several high-profile violent crimes in New York City that have prompted police to seek the public's help. In a separate incident, gunfire in Times Square wounded three bystanders, including a 4-year-old girl, as the NYPD scrambled to identify those responsible.

Authorities have not said whether the suspect in the Bronx case has any prior criminal history or whether he is believed to be a local resident. Investigators will need to determine whether the suspect had any prior contact with the victim or whether the alleged assault was a random attack.

Bronx residents on edge

The alleged rape has rattled the surrounding community. Parents in the area have expressed alarm that a child could be targeted in a park that many families use daily. Local community board members have called for increased police patrols in Crotona Park and surrounding green spaces.

New York City has seen a string of violent crimes that have tested public confidence in safety. In another case that shook the city, a teenage son found his mother dead inside their home with her throat slashed, underscoring the kinds of brutal incidents that have become disturbingly familiar in the five boroughs.

The NYPD has not released additional details about the suspect beyond the physical description and surveillance image. Investigators have not indicated whether they are pursuing any specific leads or persons of interest beyond the public appeal.

Legal stakes if an arrest is made

If apprehended, the suspect would likely face serious felony charges under New York Penal Law. Rape in the first degree, which applies when the victim is less than 13 years old or when forcible compulsion is used, carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in state prison. Because the alleged victim is 13, prosecutors could also pursue charges of criminal sexual act and predatory sexual assault against a child, depending on the facts established during the investigation.

New York law treats sexual offenses against minors with particular severity. A conviction for predatory sexual assault against a child carries a minimum sentence of 15 years to life. The case also falls under the jurisdiction of the Bronx District Attorney's office, which would handle prosecution.

Across the country, law enforcement agencies have leaned heavily on public cooperation to close cases involving violent suspects. In Ohio, police arrested a suspect after a festival shooting that wounded 12 people, a case that moved quickly once the public provided actionable information.

What investigators must still determine

Several critical questions remain unanswered. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether DNA evidence was collected during the victim's hospital examination. They have not disclosed whether the suspect was captured on any additional surveillance cameras in the area.

Investigators will also need to establish whether the suspect has been linked to any other reported sexual assaults in the Bronx or elsewhere in the city. The NYPD's Special Victims Division routinely cross-references open cases to identify serial offenders.

The department has not indicated a timeline for when it expects to make an arrest. In cases where suspects remain at large after violent public crimes, the pressure on investigators intensifies with each passing day. A recent case in Delaware, where a suspect was arrested after a fatal shooting inside a hospital, demonstrated how quickly cases can break when law enforcement moves aggressively.

A city that keeps testing its residents

For families in the Bronx, the alleged attack represents something more visceral than a crime statistic. A child went to a public park on a summer evening and, according to her account, was subjected to a horrific assault by a stranger who remains free.

The NYPD is asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS, or to submit tips online. All calls are confidential.

Until an arrest is made, a suspected predator walks free in a city that cannot seem to keep its most vulnerable residents safe in its own public spaces.
