A mother and her young son from New York faced serious charges after authorities said they tried to flee the country following a deadly highway incident.
According to a New York Post report, Alvi Limani, 20, was allegedly racing another vehicle when his SUV crashed, killing one passenger and injuring another. Prosecutors claim the pair traveled to Florida in an escape attempt but were captured before leaving the United States.
The incident unfolded on June 29 on the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey, where Limani's vehicle struck others and flipped multiple times, leading to immediate chaos and tragedy.
Reckless Racing Leads to Tragedy
Limani was behind the wheel of a BMW X3, competing against a BMW M5 driven by another man, according to officials. The high-speed activity caused Limani's SUV to collide with two other cars around 7 p.m. The vehicle then rolled over several times on the southbound lanes.
Two passengers were ejected from the SUV during the crash. Albion Hysenaj, 20, from Staten Island, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital but did not survive. The other ejected person sustained serious injuries yet managed to recover.
Limani and a 19-year-old passenger, Emily Harrington, also from Staten Island, reportedly ran from the scene on foot. This immediate flight complicated the initial investigation. Prosecutors later connected these actions to broader charges.
Failed Escape to Miami Uncovered
After the crash, Limani and his mother, Vilma Vneshta, 42, allegedly headed to Miami with plans to exit the country. Authorities intercepted them near the city on July 17. The exact location of the arrest remains unspecified.
The duo spent three weeks in Florida custody before being extradited back to New Jersey last Wednesday. TikTok videos reportedly captured them being escorted off a plane in handcuffs and leg shackles at a local airport. Booking images showed Limani wearing a neck brace with visible eye injuries, while Vneshta appeared composed with a ponytail.
New Jersey State Police confirmed both are now held at the Middlesex County Correctional Facility. They await upcoming detention hearings. This development followed their attempt to evade an aggravated manslaughter charge against Limani.
Multiple Charges Filed in Case
Limani faces first-degree aggravated manslaughter, second-degree vehicular homicide, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Additional counts include causing death while driving on a suspended license, plus charges related to the escape. These stem from both the crash and subsequent actions.
Vneshta has been charged with third-degree hindering for her role in the flight attempt. Prosecutors described her involvement as assisting her son to avoid capture. Her appearance in photos suggested she could pass for someone much younger.
The other racer, Jeter Ogando, 23, from Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was hit with vehicular homicide and related offenses. Harrington faces third-degree hindering, obstruction, and conspiracy to endanger another. All parties are linked through the prosecutor's office allegations.
