Mick Jagger remembers late singer Marianne Faithfull

Marianne Faithfull, a British singer and actress who became a cultural icon of the 1960s, died peacefully in London on Jan. 30 at the age of 78.

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and many other notables have publicly shared their profound sadness and tributes to Faithfull's influential life, as People reports.

Marianne Faithfull embarked on her musical career with the help of Andrew Loog Oldham, manager of the Rolling Stones. Her journey into fame began when she was only a teenager, quickly becoming a prominent figure in the Swinging Sixties London scene.

One of her initial successes, "As Tears Go By," was penned by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, highlighting her close ties with the band from the outset.

In the earlier years, Faithfull married John Dunbar and had her first child at the age of 18. But it was her romantic involvement with Mick Jagger that thrust her further into the public eye. They became one of the most photographed and celebrated celebrity couples of the 1960s.

Reflections from Jagger, Richards

Jagger took to Instagram to express his grief, stating, "I am so saddened to hear of the death of Marianne Faithfull. She was so much part of my life for so long. She was a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer, and a great actress. She will always be remembered."

This heartfelt tribute reflects the deep connection they shared, which also had a significant impact on Jagger's music with the Rolling Stones.

Similarly, Keith Richards shared his condolences, writing, "My heartfelt condolences to Marianne's family! I am so sad and will miss her!! Love, Keith." His post illustrates the tight-knit bond within the circle of artists during that time.

The Rolling Stones' official Instagram also joined in commemorating Faithfull's legacy by posting a clip of her 1966 performance with the band on The Ed Sullivan Show, where she performed "As Tears Go By."

End of Romantic Era in Rock 'N' Roll

Despite the widespread admiration and media spotlight, Marianne's personal life, particularly her relationship with Mick Jagger, was complex. In a 1980 interview with People, she reflected on their time together, saying, "He wasn't the great love of my life. We were just two kids living on too many different levels."

This sentiment was echoed in her later reflections about her experience in the rock 'n' roll industry. In an April 2021 interview with British Vogue, Faithfull acknowledged the kindness she received from Jagger, Richards, and Charlie Watts but also highlighted the broader challenges faced by women in the music industry at the time.
