Memphis Babysitters Face Murder Charges After Toddler's Death

Two babysitters in Memphis, Tennessee, are facing first-degree murder charges after the death of a one-year-old girl in their care.

Kiya Moore, 21, and her boyfriend, Dejon Smith, 34, were arrested following the tragic incident, as reported by the Daily Mail. The victim, identified as Kali Moore, was rushed to LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis around 3 am on Saturday but was pronounced dead at 4:01 am.

According to medical examinations, the infant suffered severe injuries, including a skull and neck fracture, massive bruising on her back, and rectal bleeding.

Further examination revealed additional trauma, including a brain bleed, bruised kidney, high liver enzymes consistent with abdominal trauma, and blood in her lungs.

Details Of The Incident And Arrest

The victim's mother, Kyera Moore, had left her daughter with the couple around 5 pm on Thursday. It is believed that the incident occurred at their home on University Street in Memphis.

When police investigated the residence, they found no baby food, and it was unclear where the infant had been sleeping.

Upon questioning, Moore and Smith provided conflicting accounts of the events leading to Kali's death. Smith claimed he heard Moore yelling at the baby and witnessed her slamming the child into the floor, walls, and wooden furniture multiple times. He stated that when he intervened, the baby was already unresponsive.

Moore, on the other hand, alleged that she had gone out, leaving Smith alone with Kali. She claimed that upon her return, she found the infant unresponsive, and Smith refused to explain what had happened.

Medical Findings And Family Response

Doctors at LeBonheur Children's Hospital documented the extent of Kali's injuries, which painted a grim picture of the abuse she had endured. The severity of the trauma, including fractures, internal bleeding, and organ damage, led to the immediate suspicion of foul play.

Kyera Moore, the victim's mother, and Kiya Moore's sister took to social media to express her grief and disbelief. In a series of emotional posts, she insisted on her sister's innocence and attempted to explain some of the injuries:

Please, my sister didn't do it... my baby has birthmarks on her back that never went away and rectal bleeding is caused from her being constipated. My sister ain't did st, that's just the n*a she live with.

Kyera further explained that she had been treating Kali's constipation with Vaseline and a diet rich in green vegetables. However, police have not commented on these claims.

Legal Proceedings And Charges

Based on the severity of Kali's injuries and the conflicting statements provided by Moore and Smith, law enforcement decided to charge both individuals with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and aggravated child neglect.

The couple's arrest and the nature of the charges reflect the gravity of the situation. First-degree murder charges in Tennessee carry severe penalties, potentially including life imprisonment or even the death penalty, depending on the circumstances and the prosecution's approach.

As the case moves forward, investigators will likely continue to gather evidence and potentially seek additional witnesses to piece together the events that led to Kali's tragic death. The conflicting accounts provided by Moore and Smith will be crucial elements for both the prosecution and defense as the legal proceedings unfold.

Why This Story Matters

This tragic story holds deep significance for the community not only because of the grievous nature of the crime but also as a grave reminder of the vulnerabilities children face. It underscores the urgent need for vigilance and thorough vetting in choosing caregivers, even within one's family.

Lessons to Learn from This Tragedy

1. Thorough Vetting: Always ensure comprehensive background checks and monitoring of caregivers, even if they are family members.

2. Recognizing Signs: Understand and recognize the signs of child distress or abuse. Early detection can save lives.

3. Community Support: Encourage a community-wide dialogue on child safety and welfare to foster environments where children are safe and nurtured.

It is crucial to remember that while we can take steps to prevent such tragedies, crime can happen to anyone, and it is essential to avoid victim-blaming.

In conclusion, the death of one-year-old Kali Moore has led to murder charges against her aunt and her aunt's boyfriend in Memphis. The infant suffered severe injuries, including fractures and internal trauma. Both suspects have provided conflicting accounts of the events. The case has deeply affected the victim's mother, who maintains her sister's innocence. As the legal process begins, the community awaits further developments in this tragic case.
