Medical examiner says dog bit newborn after death in Queens tragedy

A horrifying incident involving a 1-month-old Queens girl initially believed to be mauled to death by a pit bull puppy took a bizarre turn Wednesday. The city medical examiner revealed that the infant died of unknown causes before the six-week-old puppy inflicted any injuries on her body.

According to a New York Post report, police had originally thought the tragic infant, identified as Kiyanna Winfield, had been killed by the tiny pit bull-German Shepherd mix while her parents slept in their Queensbridge Houses public housing complex apartment early Tuesday morning.

The New York City Office of the Medical Examiner made the stunning revelation that contradicted initial assumptions, stating that while the dog had bitten off a "substantial portion" of the baby's face, these injuries occurred only after the child had already died from other causes.

Post-mortem investigation continues

The medical examiner's office confirmed this was "not a death from a dog mauling" in an email statement. They explained that the injuries inflicted by the dog were postmortem, occurring after the baby had already died.

The cause and manner of death remain undetermined at this time. Officials stated that further study would be conducted, including "a full pediatric workup" to determine what actually caused the infant's death.

Authorities discovered the horrific scene after the baby's mother called 911 shortly after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. She reportedly found her daughter, who was born on April 13, with facial injuries caused by the puppy.

Parents' account questioned

Neighbors reported hearing screams coming from the sixth-floor apartment before emergency responders arrived at the scene. The commotion drew attention to what initially appeared to be a tragic animal attack.

The mother allegedly told investigators that the infant had been sleeping between her and the father in bed. According to her account, the couple woke up to discover their puppy gnawing on the baby's face, leading them to believe the dog had killed their child.

Images shared with the newspaper show the beautiful newborn napping at the hospital and in what appears to be the family's home weeks before her death. Other photos revealed just how small the puppy actually was when captured at a city animal shelter.

Warning signs ignored

One neighbor recalled having a conversation with the mother about the puppy just two days before the incident. The interaction now seems eerily prophetic given the circumstances.

"I told her, 'That dog needs to be on a leash,'" building resident Shanel Nroville told the Post. "She said, 'No, this dog don't bite.' I said, 'All dogs bite.'"

While the neighbor's warning focused on potential danger from the dog, the medical examiner's findings have dramatically shifted the focus of the investigation. The revelation that the puppy didn't cause the death raises serious questions about what actually happened to baby Kiyanna.

Lessons to Learn From This Tragedy

1. Infant care should be prioritized first: Bringing a dog, especially a new puppy, into the home of a newborn can present challenges. Families with very young children should evaluate risks closely before introducing pets, no matter the animal's age or temperament.

2. Never underestimate warning signs: Neighbors and friends may see signs of concern that others miss. It’s important to listen to advice when safety is involved, particularly with regard to pets and vulnerable individuals like children.

3. Understanding criminal investigations takes time: This case is a reminder that early assumptions can be misleading. Even when a situation seems clear, thorough forensic analysis is essential before concluding. At the same time, we must never blame victims and instead approach each loss with compassion and care.

Why This Story Matters

This tragedy forces us to confront the hidden risks inside what should be safe homes. The initial report of a dog attack quickly evolved into a more complex and troubling investigation, reflecting how tragic events can be both shocking and misunderstood. The story holds significance for both parents and policymakers, as it highlights the need for awareness about pet safety, infant care, and proper investigative processes. In a densely populated city like New York, these tragedies ripple through communities like Queensbridge.

Conclusion

In a tragic case that continues to raise troubling questions, 1-month-old Kiyanna Winfield was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning inside her family's apartment in Queens. What was first thought to be a deadly dog mauling turned out to be something much different, as the New York City Medical Examiner revealed that the infant had already died before a six-week-old puppy bit her face. While the dog has been taken into city custody, police are still pursuing leads to determine the actual cause of death.
