Joey D. Vieira, beloved 'Lassie' star, dies at 80

Joey D. Vieira, an iconic figure from a beloved classic television show, has died.

Vieira, of Lassie fame, passed away late on April 7, just moments before he would have celebrated his 81st birthday, as the New York Post reports.

The actor, born on April 8, 1944, in Los Angeles, California, died surrounded by his loved ones. He was admitted into hospice care shortly before his death.

Remembering a TV legend

Vieira was best known for his portrayal of Sylvester "Porky" Brockway on Lassie, a series in which he appeared in 91 episodes. His performance left an indelible mark during the show's celebrated run.

Lassie not only captured the hearts of viewers but also received critical acclaim, winning two Emmy Awards for "Best Family Television Show."

The series has remained a symbol of wholesome family entertainment.

Before captivating audiences as "Porky," Vieira debuted in television with roles in Meet Mr. McNutley and The Pride of the Family.

His early appearances paved the way for his casting in Lassie at just ten years old, appearing on the show from 1954 to 1955.

Vieira's varied career

Following his stint on Lassie, Joey D. Vieira continued to explore various roles in both television and film.

His credits include appearances in Shirley Temple’s Storybook, My Three Sons, and movies like Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and The Patriot.

Aside from his acting, Vieira also made a name for himself as a successful record producer. His contribution to the entertainment industry spans across different facets, showing his versatile talent.

Laurie Jacobson Provost, wife of Vieira’s co-star Jon Provost, expressed her closeness with Joey and his family.

“I have known him for nearly 30 years. We were in touch with Joey and his kids all these years,” she stated, underscoring the deep bonds formed during and after the show.

Personal tributes pour in

A personal tribute posted by Jon Provost on his Facebook page revealed the depth of their friendship and mutual respect.

He wrote, "I met Joey when I was seven years old, when I started Lassie, we hit it off and remain friends forever. Joey was a great guy, a talented actor, and even a successful record producer. Joey has joined his son Beau in heaven."

In the wake of his passing, the cause of Vieira's death has not been disclosed. His daughter, Shanyn, announced the news of his death to Laurie Jacobson, Provos, the morning after he died.

The loss of Vieira is felt deeply by his friends, family, and fans. His legacy in television, particularly through "Lassie," as well as his other contributions to the arts, remain influential. He survived by his daughter, Shanyn, who continues to carry the memories of her father and brother Beau, who passed away from cancer in 2023.

Joey D. Vieira’s passing marks the end of an era for those who grew up watching Lassie and for those who admired his broader work in entertainment. His portrayal of Porky Brockway remains a beloved memory in the annals of television history, and his impact onscreen continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
