A New York drug dealer's sentence connects to the tragic overdose of renowned actor Michael K. Williams.

Michael K. Williams, widely recognized for his riveting roles in productions like HBO's "The Wire" and "Boardwalk Empire," faced an untimely end.

The actor, despite his illustrious career, had a constant battle with addiction, confessing to multiple relapses over the years.

Unfortunately, Williams' fight came to a tragic halt when he was found lifeless in his Brooklyn penthouse in September 2021, the cause being an accidental overdose from a lethal mix of heroin and fentanyl, The Daily Caller reported.

Footage from a surveillance camera the day preceding his passing unveiled Williams potentially making a drug purchase from Irvin Cartagena.

This video, along with other mounting evidence, eventually entangled Cartagena in the actor's death. This wasn't Cartagena's first brush with the law. In February 2021, amidst a NYPD sting operation, he was apprehended while on pretrial release from a prior arrest.

Link between Cartagena and the fentanyl crisis

The U.S. Attorney's office expressed their firm stance against drug dealers perpetuating the rising fentanyl dilemma. Cartagena and his associates, despite their knowledge of the drug's lethal nature, persisted in their illicit trade even after it had claimed a life.

Cartagena's involvement extended beyond individual sales. He was part of a larger drug syndicate, the DTO, implicated in selling the fatal concoction of heroin laced with fentanyl, MSN reported.

The U.S. Attorney's office said they, "will tenaciously continue our enforcement efforts against unscrupulous drug dealers who distribute poison and exacerbate the scourge of the fentanyl epidemic."

Charges and sentencing

Following a sequence of events, Cartagena fled to Puerto Rico after Williams' death, only to be arrested in February 2022.

He later pled guilty in April to conspiring to distribute the lethal drugs. Subsequent to his confession, U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams, while sentencing Cartagena, commented on his dual nature. When abstinent, Cartagena was often perceived as a diligent and humble individual by acquaintances.

Irvin Cartagena, or "Green Eyes" as he was sometimes known, hailing from Aibonito, Puerto Rico, was decreed a ten-year prison term, followed by a five-year supervised release for his crimes.

The nefarious web did not revolve around Cartagena alone. His co-conspirators, Robles and Cruz, await their sentencing on September 26.

In a related case, Carlos Macci, another accomplice, was handed a 2.5-year prison sentence last month and is mandated to undergo a year in an inpatient drug rehabilitation center.
