Internet Celebrity Squirrel Euthanized After NY State Seizure

In a tragic turn of events, Peanut the Squirrel, known for his online fame, met a grim fate after being taken from his owner by state authorities.

Peanut's euthanization follows a biting incident involving a New York investigator, sparking a rabies test that led to his and another pet's death, as the New York Post reports.

Peanut, a charismatic gray squirrel, was rescued at a tender age by Mark Longo after a devastating accident that involved his mother. Over the years, Peanut, affectionately known by followers as "P'Nut," captivated social media users across platforms like Instagram and TikTok with his adorable antics and quirky dress-ups, including his famed tiny felt cowboy hat.

Mark Longo, after saving Peanut, established "P’Nut’s Freedom Farm", a sanctuary located in upstate New York. The farm became a haven for Peanut and other rescued animals, providing them with a safe place to thrive away from life-threatening dangers.

Longo’s loving care for Peanut showed through the squirrel’s sociable nature, often seen snuggling in a baseball cap or munching on his favorite treat -- waffles. Their bond was palpable through the screen, bringing joy to viewers and solidifying Peanut's status as an internet sensation.

Incident That Led to Seizure

The serenity at P'Nut's Freedom Farm was disrupted following anonymous complaints about the presence of potentially rabid animals. This prompted the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to intervene, leading to the seizure of Peanut and his raccoon companion, Fred from the sanctuary.

The circumstances escalated after an unfortunate altercation where Peanut bit an investigator. This incident triggered the DEC's decision to euthanize both animals to conduct rabies tests, adhering to health safety protocols concerning rabies vector species.

The DEC's approach, although governed by public health concerns, struck a blow to Longo who described Peanut as the "best thing that ever happened" to him. The loss was not only personal but deeply felt across the vibrant community of Peanut's followers.

Public Response and Longo's Heartbreak

News of Peanut’s death spread quickly, evoking an outpour of grief and anger. Longo himself expressed his devastation on Instagram, mourning his beloved pet with heartfelt words, "RIP MY BEST FRIEND. Thank you for the best 7 years of my life." His posts resonated widely, as he criticized those responsible for the complaints leading to the seizure, proclaiming, "You took one of the most amazing animals away from me because of your selfishness."

Amid the social media turmoil, Longo also sought financial support to fuel a potential legal fight and ensure the longevity of his non-profit animal haven.

The DEC, on the other hand, stood by its actions, explaining through a statement the necessity of their response to the rabies risk, derived from the nature of the animals involved and the ensuing safety protocols.

Why This Story Matters

The unfolding of these events brings to light the intense scrutiny and regulations surrounding the ownership of unconventional pets. It challenges the boundaries of wildlife domestication and raises vital discussion points on public health safety versus animal welfare and rights.

Moreover, this incident underscores the profound impact social media can have on forming public opinion, shaping legislative focus, and altering lives—human and animal alike.

Lessons to Learn

1. Always ensure legal compliance when rescuing wildlife; familiarize yourself with state and local laws related to wildlife rehabilitation and ownership.

2. Understand the responsibilities and risks involved with caring for rabies vector species, including necessary vaccinations and safety measures to avoid tragic outcomes.

3. Advocate for animals responsibly; use social platforms to educate and inform, while fostering a supportive community aware of the realities and challenges of animal care.

It's crucial to remember that while proactive steps can mitigate risks, crime or unforeseen events can still occur. Placing blame solely on the victim without understanding the context only detracts from the meaningful lessons to be drawn.

The tale of Peanut the Squirrel not only reflects the complexities of animal care and public health directives but also encapsulates the broader theme of compassion towards animals and the repercussions of societal actions. Peanut's story deeply resonates with those advocating for animal rights and calls for a balanced dialogue on wildlife protection and ethical treatment.
