Iconic Rapper-Actor Chino XL Found Dead At 50

According to Variety, Derek Keith Barbosa, famously known as Chino XL, tragically passed away at his home at the age of 50.

The untimely demise of  Chino XL has left the music and entertainment industry in mourning. Chino XL, whose real name was Derek Keith Barbosa, was a pivotal figure in the rap music scene starting in the late 1980s.

He marked his beginning in the music industry alongside producer Kerri Chandler as the duo Art of Origin.

Their talents led them to sign with Def American Recordings via Warner Bros. in 1991. This was a significant stepping stone, paving the way for Chino XL's influential solo career.

In 1996, Chino XL released his debut album, "Here to Save You All." The album was critically acclaimed for its unique approach to hip-hop and intricate punchlines, branding him the King of Punchlines.

Chino XL's Contribution to Music and Acting

Aside from his music career, Chino XL also ventured into acting during the early 2000s.

He appeared in several television shows and films such as "Alex & Emma," "The Young and the Restless," "Reno 911!" and "CSI: Miami." His versatility showcased his talents beyond music.

Following his acting stint, Chino continued to release albums, including "Poison Pen" in 2006, "Something Sacred" in 2008, and "Ricanstruction: The Black Rosary" in 2012. His relentless creativity led to his latest album, "God’s Carpenter," which was released in 2023.

His collaboration with Rakim on the song "Pendulum Swing" remained one of his last public music releases, showing his persistent dedication to his craft.

Chino XL's Lasting Legacy in Entertainment

Beyond music and films, Chino XL also turned his creative passion toward writing graphic novels. His works include "Black Mass," "Lucy," and "Skin and Bones: The Descent of the Holy," which further exhibits his multifaceted artistic abilities.

He is survived by his children Chynna, Bella, Lyric, Kiyana; stepson Shawn; five grandchildren; his mother, and longtime partner Stephanie.

His family, acknowledging his multi-dimensional life, remarked on his role as a father and his impactful yet realist approach to life.

In their statement, his daughters shared: "Our father had many titles - King of Punchlines, Puerto Rican Superhero - but the most important one was Girl Dad. And what he gave us most in that role was his strength, straightforwardness, and ability to be super realistic."
