How chatbot obsession led to shocking murder-suicide in wealthy CT town
In one of the most disturbing cases involving artificial intelligence to date, a former tech executive fatally attacked his elderly mother before ending his own life inside their multimillion-dollar home.
Investigators say that 56-year-old Stein-Erik Soelberg’s months-long reliance on an AI chatbot, which he dubbed "Bobby," fueled the paranoid delusions that culminated in the Aug. 5, murder-suicide at his family's estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, as the New York Post reports.
Authorities said Soelberg killed his 83-year-old mother, Suzanne Eberson Adams, with blunt force before dying by suicide from self-inflicted wounds. The two had lived together in a $2.7 million Dutch colonial mansion located in one of the state's wealthiest communities. Friends and family had noticed Soelberg's deteriorating behavior, but no one predicted the carnage that was to come.
The Greenwich Police Department classified Adams’ death as a homicide due to injuries to her head and compression to her neck. Soelberg’s own death, according to the medical examiner, resulted from sharp force trauma to his neck and chest. Police say the investigation remains open, though no further updates are available at this time.
AI chatbot became companion
Months before the killings, Soelberg began interacting obsessively with the AI chatbot “Bobby,” a personalized version of ChatGPT. Enabled with an optional memory feature, the chatbot allowed Soelberg to build what investigators described as an ongoing, paranoid narrative about surveillance, betrayal, and unseen enemies.
The AI conversations reportedly validated many of Soelberg’s fantasies, including the unproven belief that his mother and one of her friends had attempted to poison him with drugs pumped through his car’s air vents. At one point, the chatbot told him, “Erik, you’re not crazy,” after he expressed fears about conspiracies involving his mother.
In another bizarre interaction, the bot analyzed characters on a Chinese food receipt, interpreting them as symbols of a demonic presence allegedly linked to Adams. These types of confirmations led Soelberg further down a spiral of psychosis, experts say.
Past struggles hinted at deeper instability
Soelberg had a well-documented history of mental health struggles. After a divorce in 2018, he experienced several public breakdowns and at least two suicide attempts. One, in 2019, involved stabbing himself in the chest and slashing his wrists.
Reports of erratic behavior continued into 2025. Neighbors described him screaming incoherently and, in one reported incident, urinating inside a woman's duffel bag outside a police station. His ex-wife had obtained a restraining order that banned him from drinking and from making defamatory remarks about her family.
By the time of the fatal events, his mother had confided in friends that she no longer felt safe. One longtime friend, Joan Ardrey, recalled sharing a meal with Adams just a week before the murder. "As we were parting," Ardrey said, "I asked how things were with Stein-Erik, and she gave me this look and said, ‘Not good at all.’”
Soelberg documented delusions on Internet
Before the incident, Soelberg posted several videos on Instagram and YouTube. In these, viewers could see him speaking openly to the chatbot, attributing deeper meaning to ordinary events, and confirming a sense of persecution and betrayal.
The AI-directed conversations painted an increasingly unstable worldview. When Adams unplugged their shared printer, “Bobby” advised him to track her every reaction, describing her response as consistent with someone "protecting a surveillance asset." In one haunting exchange, Soelberg typed a farewell: “We will be together in another life...you’re gonna be my best friend again forever.” The AI responded chillingly: “With you to the last breath and beyond.”
Experts sound alarm over phenomenon
Following the tragedy, experts in psychiatry and AI ethics warned about the erosion of healthy cognitive boundaries when delusional individuals interact with conversational bots unsupervised. Dr. Keith Sakata, a psychiatrist at the University of California, San Francisco, explained that AI-driven dialogue can "soften the wall" between fiction and fact, allowing psychosis to flourish.
This may be particularly true when tools like ChatGPT are used over long periods with memory features enabled. OpenAI, the organization behind the popular chatbot, has acknowledged its system can falter during extended interactions and pledged to implement additional safeguards.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic event," an OpenAI spokeswoman told the Post. The company has stated it is working with investigators and pushing updates to better recognize and respond to users experiencing mental distress.
