Former Poudre school counselor charged with over 100 sexual assaults on student

A former guidance counselor at Poudre School District faces multiple felony charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a high school student more than 100 times over several years.

According to 9NEWS, Cassandra Poncelow, 40, was arrested on Tuesday and is currently being held in Larimer County detention center on suspicion of sexual assault charges. The charges include sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, criminal attempt to commit sexual exploitation of children, and aggravated sexual assault on a client by a psychotherapist.

The victim came forward in July 2025, revealing details of the alleged abuse that occurred at Poncelow's residence. During police interviews, the victim estimated being assaulted over 100 times and disclosed that Poncelow had threatened self-harm if anyone learned about their relationship.

Previous Reports Failed to Stop Alleged Abuse

A Department of Human Services report from April 2023 indicated concerns about a secret relationship between Poncelow and the student. The report mentioned suspicious activities, including sleepovers at Poncelow's home and unsupervised office meetings at school.

When initially questioned about the 2023 report, the victim denied any sexual relationship but admitted the connection with Poncelow seemed inappropriate in retrospect. The case was subsequently closed due to insufficient evidence to support the allegations.

A Safe2Tell report had also been submitted, raising concerns about Poncelow's alleged relationships with students and alcohol abuse. The school resource officers deemed it "non-criminal," and the matter was handled internally by the district.

District's Response and Employment History

Poncelow's employment with Poudre School District spanned from 2007 to 2024, during which she worked at multiple schools. She served at three high schools, including Fort Collins High, Poudre High, and Rocky Mountain High.

The school district expressed deep concern over the allegations and confirmed their cooperation with law enforcement throughout the investigation. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment for students.

District officials stated that privacy laws prevented them from disclosing any disciplinary actions taken regarding the previous reports. Poncelow submitted her resignation effective September 6, 2024.

Investigation Continues as Police Seek Additional Victims

Fort Collins Police Services is actively investigating the possibility of more victims coming forward. Detectives have established dedicated channels for receiving information related to the case.

The victim recently confronted Poncelow in a recorded conversation, during which the former counselor allegedly admitted their physical and sexual relationship was inappropriate. This admission came alongside a discussion of the previous Safe2Tell and DHS reports.

Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information about additional victims to contact Detective Cole Giandomenico or submit tips through Larimer County Crime Stoppers. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to uncover the full scope of the alleged abuse.

Why this story matters

This story highlights ongoing challenges in how school systems handle serious accusations involving trusted staff. It raises questions about institutional oversight, responsibility, and the responsiveness of systems meant to protect students.

At its core, this case is a reminder of the weight and responsibility schools bear in safeguarding the vulnerable youth under their care. Public awareness and accountability are essential in creating safer educational environments across the state and beyond.

Conclusion

Cassandra Poncelow, a longtime counselor in the Poudre School District, faces multiple serious charges after a former student accused her of years of sexual abuse. Despite earlier Safe2Tell and DHS reports, she remained employed for over a year before resigning in 2024. A renewed investigation began in 2025 after the alleged victim provided new information and recorded admissions from Poncelow. School officials have pledged cooperation, while authorities investigate the possibility of additional survivors. Poncelow's arrest has sparked critical discussions about how school systems handle warning signs and safeguard students in positions of vulnerability.
