Florida teen allegedly killed man, stuffed remains in suitcases after printing sex-offender list

A 19-year-old man in Palm Bay, Florida, was arrested after investigators discovered human remains inside two suitcases abandoned in a largely undeveloped area of Central Florida known as The Compound of Palm Bay.

Lucas Sander Jones was taken into custody on March 28 after police executed a search warrant at his residence, and he now faces multiple charges — including second-degree murder — in connection with the death of 28-year-old Colie Lee Daniel of Indialantic, whose dismembered remains were found inside the luggage, according to Fox 35 Orlando and Wesh 2.

The case has drawn significant public attention, in part because of allegations that Jones may have been deliberately seeking out registered sex offenders. According to Wesh 2, Jones's girlfriend told investigators that she "knows [Jones] had printed a list of nearby sex offenders." A person named Colie L. Daniel of Indialantic was listed as a registered sex offender in 2023, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

How Investigators Uncovered the Grim Discovery

The investigation began when the two suitcases were found in The Compound of Palm Bay, a swath of mostly undeveloped land in Central Florida, as described by Fox News. One of the suitcases was reportedly found partially open. The other contained personal items and a package that was addressed to Jones, according to Fox 35 Orlando, as The Daily Caller reports.

Both pieces of luggage allegedly contained human remains. Daniel had been reported missing on March 22, just days before the discovery led investigators to Jones's doorstep. Police identified the remains as belonging to Daniel, the 28-year-old Indialantic man.

When officers arrived at Jones's home to execute the search warrant on March 28, they encountered both Jones and his girlfriend, according to Fox 35 Orlando. The outlet reported that Jones had visible injuries and refused to speak with investigators. A search of the residence allegedly turned up blood stains and a knife described as being similar to a weapon found inside one of the suitcases.

Girlfriend's Shifting Statements Raise Questions

A critical element of the case involves statements made by Jones's girlfriend to investigators. According to an affidavit cited by Wesh 2, she alleged that Jones confessed to the killing. She told police that Jones said, "I killed somebody and cut him up."

The girlfriend reportedly said she did not know how the two men initially met. She originally told police that she witnessed Daniel alive in Jones's bed on March 20, according to Wesh 2. However, in a subsequent interview approximately ten days later, she recanted that claim.

In the later interview, the girlfriend said her earlier statement was false and added that she had never seen the victim alive or his body, according to Wesh 2. The shifting nature of her accounts adds a layer of complexity to the investigation and could become a focal point during any future court proceedings.

Autopsy Findings and Criminal Charges Filed

An autopsy conducted on Daniel's remains ruled his death a homicide, according to documents cited by Wesh 2. The examination revealed evidence of several blunt force injuries as well as dismemberment. The affidavit further alleged that Jones told his girlfriend he had used a baseball bat to kill Daniel before dismembering him.

Jones is facing a lengthy list of criminal charges. Fox 35 Orlando reported that the charges include abuse of a dead human body, tampering with evidence, and improper disposal of human remains. Wesh 2 additionally reported that Jones faces a second-degree murder charge in connection with Daniel's death.

Legal representatives for Jones have declined to comment on the case when contacted by Wesh 2. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities piece together the timeline of events and the nature of the relationship — if any — between Jones and Daniel.

Lessons to Learn

1. Vigilante actions are never a substitute for the justice system. Regardless of a person's criminal history, targeting individuals outside the boundaries of the law leads to devastating consequences for everyone involved, including the perpetrator. If someone feels threatened by a person in their community, the appropriate step is always to contact law enforcement.

2. Be aware of warning signs in the people around you. Jones's girlfriend allegedly received a confession and noticed troubling behavior, yet the timeline suggests there was a delay before the full scope of the situation became clear to authorities. Reporting concerns early — even when the picture is incomplete — can save lives.

3. Personal safety awareness remains essential, particularly when interacting with people whose intentions are unknown. That said, it is critical to emphasize that crime can happen to anyone regardless of the precautions they take, and we should never blame the victim for the criminal actions of another person.

Why This Story Matters

This case raises deeply troubling questions about vigilante violence and the dangers of individuals taking the law into their own hands. Communities in Central Florida and beyond are grappling with the reality that a teenager allegedly compiled a list of sex offenders and may have acted on it with lethal force. The story underscores the importance of trusting established legal systems to handle justice, while also reminding the public that every person — regardless of their past — deserves protection from extrajudicial harm.

In summary, 19-year-old Lucas Sander Jones was arrested on March 28 in Palm Bay, Florida, after human remains belonging to 28-year-old Colie Lee Daniel were found inside two suitcases in The Compound of Palm Bay; an autopsy ruled Daniel's death a homicide caused by blunt force injuries and dismemberment; Jones's girlfriend allegedly told police he confessed to the killing and that he had printed a list of nearby sex offenders; Daniel, who had been reported missing on March 22, was listed as a registered sex offender in 2023 by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement; and Jones now faces charges including second-degree murder, abuse of a dead human body, tampering with evidence, and improper disposal of human remains, while his lawyers have declined to comment on the case.
