Florida teacher allegedly pursued the student's mother to gain access to her 13-year-old daughter
A former Florida middle school teacher was arrested Monday on charges that he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old student after allegedly dating the girl's mother to gain proximity to the child.
Daniel Le Lievre, 41, who taught at Tuskawilla Middle School in Oviedo, Florida, is accused of grooming the teenager for months while romantically involved with her mother, ultimately raping the girl at his home during the 2023–2024 holiday break, according to police.
The case has drawn sharp scrutiny from parents and child safety advocates who say it exposes alarming gaps in how schools monitor teacher-student interactions. Critics argue that warning signs were present well before the alleged assault, and that the systems meant to protect children failed at multiple levels.
A Relationship Built on an Alleged Hidden Motive
According to police, Le Lievre and the victim's mother began a romantic relationship in October 2023. Authorities described it as a four-month fling, during which Le Lievre sometimes stayed overnight at the mother's home with her and her children, the Post reported.
However, police allege the relationship was never genuine. A police report obtained by WFLA states that when the couple split up in January 2024, Le Lievre allegedly told the mother he had only dated her to "get closer to her daughter.
The mother reportedly observed troubling behavior while the relationship was ongoing. She allegedly caught Le Lievre and her daughter having late-night phone conversations and also witnessed them holding hands at the Disney Springs shopping complex in Orlando.
Elaborate Methods Allegedly Used to Groom the Victim
The complaint against Le Lievre paints a disturbing picture of calculated grooming. Police allege he taught the 13-year-old Morse Code so they could communicate secretly. He also allegedly created disposable email addresses to correspond with the girl and instructed her to delete records of their exchanges.
At Tuskawilla Middle School, investigators say Le Lievre spent time alone with the victim in his classroom before and after school hours. Police allege they would hold hands and hug, and that he sometimes rubbed her thighs. He allegedly kept the girl's perfume and a blanket stored in a drawer inside his classroom.
Authorities further allege that Le Lievre manipulated school scheduling to place the girl in another one of his classes, giving him even more access to the child during the school day.
The Alleged Assault on Christmas Eve
The alleged sexual assault took place during the 2023–2024 holiday break at Le Lievre's home. Police say the girl's mother and her children were spending the night at his residence when the incident occurred.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, the student told investigators she went to the bathroom in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve, and Le Lievre followed her. She reported that he instructed her to remove her clothing, assaulted her sexually, and then told her not to tell anyone.
The mother and daughter did not report the alleged assault to police until February 2026. Le Lievre was subsequently arrested at his home on Monday and charged with custodial sexual battery and a sex offense by an authority figure soliciting a romantic relationship with a student. Jail records indicate he is being held without bond.
Prior Investigation and School District Response
Le Lievre was previously investigated in 2024 for violating policies related to student abuse, abandonment, neglect, and relationships with students, as reported by the Orlando Sentinel. Seminole County Public Schools confirmed to WESH that Le Lievre resigned before he could be terminated in 2024 and is not eligible for rehire.
In a statement, school officials wrote: "The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and any type of behavior that undermines that safety will not be tolerated at Seminole County Public Schools." Le Lievre, a father of two daughters, had previously served in the Peace Corps and taught overseas in Samoa and South Korea before returning to South Florida to raise his family, according to a profile on the district's website.
The fact that Le Lievre was investigated yet still able to resign voluntarily rather than face immediate dismissal raises difficult questions about institutional accountability and whether more aggressive intervention could have led to earlier criminal charges.
Lessons to Learn
1. Parents should be vigilant about any adult — including a trusted authority figure — who seeks unusual or excessive one-on-one access to their children. Late-night communications, secret messaging systems, and unexplained physical closeness are serious red flags that warrant immediate action.
2. Schools and parents alike should be aware that grooming often occurs gradually and can involve manipulation of both the child and the family. In this case, police allege the perpetrator embedded himself in the family's daily life, making his behavior harder to detect. Open, age-appropriate conversations with children about boundaries and inappropriate adult conduct are essential.
3. If suspicious behavior is observed or disclosed, it should be reported to law enforcement promptly.
That said, it is critical to recognize that no matter what precautions are taken, crime can happen to anyone, and we should never blame the victim or the victim's family for the actions of an alleged predator.
Why This Story Matters
This case underscores the profound trust that families place in educators and the devastating consequences when that trust is allegedly exploited. It highlights the need for stronger safeguards within school systems to detect and prevent grooming behavior before it escalates to assault. Communities across the country should view this as a call to scrutinize policies governing teacher conduct, reporting mechanisms, and the consequences for those who violate the duty to protect children.
