Father, son die after Groton bank robbery turns into motel standoff

A father-son duo who robbed a Connecticut bank last week both died from gunshot wounds following an intense six-hour standoff with police at a local motel, authorities confirmed.

According to the New York Post, Shaun Fallon, 56, and his son Zachary Fallon, 27, were found with gunshot wounds after police heard shots inside their hotel room during the prolonged confrontation with law enforcement.

The pair, both residents of Charleston, Rhode Island, had threatened a bank teller while wearing medical masks during the robbery of Chelsea Groton Bank in Groton last Thursday morning. They escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash before police tracked them to a nearby Super 8 Motel.

Dramatic Standoff Ends In Tragedy

Police located the Fallons' getaway vehicle at the motel approximately six hours after the bank robbery took place. The discovery initiated a tense standoff as the suspects barricaded themselves inside their room.

During the confrontation, the father and son claimed to be armed with both firearms and explosives, refusing repeated commands to surrender to authorities. The situation escalated dramatically when two gunshots were heard from inside the motel room.

Drones deployed by police confirmed both suspects were "incapacitated by apparent gunshot wounds," prompting emergency response teams to enter the room after bomb squad personnel cleared the area. Despite the Fallons' claims, no explosives were discovered at the scene.

Medical Response Failed To Save Suspects

The wounded suspects were rushed to Lawrence Memorial Hospital following the standoff. Medical teams were unable to save the younger Fallon, who was pronounced dead hours after arriving at the medical facility.

Shaun Fallon, the father, initially survived his injuries but remained hospitalized in critical condition for several days. Police confirmed to the Connecticut Post that he succumbed to his wounds on Monday, four days after the incident.

The official cause of death for both father and son will be determined by the medical examiner's office. Authorities have not specified whether the gunshot wounds were self-inflicted or who fired the shots heard during the standoff.

Police Chief Commends Emergency Response

Groton Police Chief L.J. Fusaro praised the professionalism displayed by law enforcement personnel throughout the dangerous situation. The chief's statement emphasized the volatile nature of the standoff.

"This was an extremely dangerous and volatile situation, and I want to commend the bravery and professionalism of all the law enforcement personnel involved in bringing it to a close," Fusaro said in an official statement released after the incident was resolved.

The motel was evacuated of all other guests during the standoff, ensuring no civilian casualties occurred. Police tactical units maintained their positions around the building for hours while negotiators attempted to secure a peaceful surrender.

Why this story matters

This case highlights the unpredictable and dangerous nature of criminal activity and its impact on communities. It underscores the challenges law enforcement face in pursuing peaceful resolutions during tense, high-stakes situations. The tragedy also serves as a serious reminder that crime often leaves devastation across multiple lives, even beyond those directly involved.

Conclusion

On June 12, 2025, Shaun and Zachary Fallon robbed the Chelsea Groton Bank in Groton, Connecticut, before barricading themselves inside a Super 8 Motel room during a six-hour standoff with police.

Authorities said the men died from apparent gunshot wounds, with Zachary pronounced dead on June 13 and Shaun dying from his injuries on June 16. A bomb squad cleared the scene, and no explosives or injuries to bystanders were reported. The motive and sequence of events remain under investigation by local authorities and the medical examiner’s office.
