Father, intending to shoot bird, fatally strikes daughter instead

A family’s ordinary day turned fatal when a father’s attempt to shoot a bird ended in the tragic death of his teenage daughter just six days short of her birthday.

David Schultheis, a 34-year-old man from rural Illinois, has been charged in the fatal shooting of his 14-year-old daughter after aiming at a buzzard inside a building, sparking a deeper investigation and the involvement of another suspect, as the New York Post reports.

The deadly incident occurred on July 21 in Prairie Du Rocher, Illinois, when Schultheis spotted a buzzard that had entered a brick building. According to investigators, the father attempted to shoot the bird by sticking only his arm into the doorway of the structure, while keeping his head and body outside. The decision was reportedly made to avoid a potential ricochet inside the building.

As Schultheis fired the gun, a .40-caliber pistol, the round passed through the bird. The bullet then traveled through a window and struck his daughter, Emma Schultheis, who was standing outside. The 14-year-old, described as vibrant and full of life, was standing nearby, unaware of the danger she was in.

Emergency services arrived quickly at the scene. First responders began life-saving measures almost immediately, including administering CPR. Emma was soon transported to a hospital in the St. Louis area, where, despite the efforts of the emergency team, she was pronounced dead.

Fatal shot prompts police probe

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department responded to the devastating loss, coordinating with the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit to begin a full investigation. As details emerged, the story became even more complex. Authorities focused not just on how the shooting occurred, but also on what actions followed in its immediate aftermath.

On Sept. 2, Monroe County State’s Attorney Ryan Webb officially filed charges against David Schultheis. The father now faces one felony count of reckless discharge of a firearm. Officials emphasized the tragic nature of what took place, but highlighted the legal responsibilities that come with handling firearms.

In a deeper turn, a second individual was also charged in connection with the case. Karen Schwarze, 58, from Valmeyer, Illinois, faces charges of concealing a homicidal death and obstructing justice. Her alleged actions added another layer of concern for investigators.

Actions to obstruct justice raise alarms

Authorities allege that Schwarze attempted to hide the weapon used in the shooting -- a .40-caliber pistol -- soon after the incident occurred. In addition to allegedly concealing evidence, Schwarze is accused of trying to influence others involved in the case to remain silent when approached by law enforcement.

During the early phases of the investigation, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department carried out search warrants that reportedly revealed alarming findings. According to official statements, Schwarze pressured individuals not to speak with investigators, potentially hindering the swift gathering of critical information.

“Following the execution of search warrants, Ms. Schwarze attempted to influence others not to speak with law enforcement officers,” said a spokesperson from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department. These reported actions led prosecutors to charge her with obstruction of justice in addition to concealment of a death.

Suspect surrenders

David Schultheis voluntarily surrendered himself to the Monroe County Jail after charges were filed. He was released pending an upcoming court appearance. His cooperation has been noted by authorities, though it does not lessen the gravity of the accusations he now faces.

As of press time, Karen Schwarze has not yet surrendered but is reportedly making arrangements to do so. Law enforcement officials have indicated they are prepared to take whatever steps are necessary to pursue justice for the victim and her loved ones.

Sgt. Justin Biggs of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department shared the emotional weight of the ordeal: “There are no words that can adequately express the heartbreak and gravity of this tragic event.”

Lessons to learn

While this situation is deeply heartbreaking, there are valuable lessons to take away for both gun owners and the general public:

1. Never use a firearm in an unsafe environment. Aiming or firing a gun in enclosed or unpredictable settings can have fatal consequences. In this case, the attempt to shoot a bird inside a building led to a completely unintended, permanent loss of life.

2. Always account for what lies beyond your target. Even in pursuits such as pest control or wildlife removal, it's critical to recognize that bullets may travel far beyond what’s intended. This tragedy illustrates the dangers of poor environmental awareness.

3. Do not tamper with evidence or obstruct investigations. Efforts to hide firearms or silence witnesses can lead to additional criminal charges and deeper grief for victims’ families. It’s vital to cooperate truthfully with authorities. That said, no matter how careful we are, tragedies can still happen. We should remember to support rather than blame those affected.

Why this story matters

This story emphasizes the devastating cost of irresponsible gun use and the urgency of firearm safety education. It also highlights the harm that can be caused when individuals interfere with the justice process.

Finally, it underscores the importance of thinking beyond the moment—individual decisions can carry irreversible consequences.
