Ex-Marines Convicted In Neo-Nazi Plot To Attack U.S. Power Grid

As the New York Post reported, two former Marines and another accomplice have been sentenced for plotting to dismantle parts of the U.S. power grid.

Three men were recently sentenced for their roles in a sinister plot linked to white supremacist ideologies aimed at crippling the northwestern United States' power infrastructure.

The Beginning Of A Dangerous Alliance

In 2017, the seeds of a disturbing plan were sown when Liam Collins, a former Marine, connected with Paul James Kryscuk through an online neo-Nazi forum.

The meeting set the stage for a conspiracy that would expand over the next few years. Collins, who had served at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, found a like-minded individual in Kryscuk who shared his extremist views.

The duo, later joined by another ex-Marine, Justin Wade Hermanson, began to lay the groundwork for what they envisioned as a guerrilla organization. Their objective was to "reclaim" land they felt was rightfully theirs, though this belief was grounded in extremist ideologies.

Their discussions soon turned into concrete plans for domestic terrorism, with a specific focus on targeting critical power infrastructures in the northwestern U.S.

Escalation to Illegal Activities

Between 2017 and 2020, the group’s activities escalated from mere planning to actionable offenses. They engaged in the illegal manufacture and sale of firearms, and they even pilfered military gear to prepare for their envisioned conflict.

Their preparations included training sessions with firearms and military gear in Boise, Idaho, where they honed their skills for the attacks they planned. It was a period marked by increasing radicalization and the solidification of their capabilities to carry out acts of terror.

Authorities eventually uncovered these plans, finding a handwritten note that detailed the specific locations in the power grid they intended to target. This note was a critical piece of evidence in their eventual arrests and convictions.

Arrests and Convictions

The culmination of their plot came when law enforcement intervened, arresting Kryscuk, Collins, and Hermanson between late 2020 and early 2021. Their arrest marked the end of a dangerous trajectory that could have resulted in significant harm. Following their arrests, each of the men pleaded guilty to their roles in the plot.

Last Thursday, in 2024, they were sentenced to prison for various terms, reflecting the seriousness of their offenses.

A particularly revealing aspect of their communication was found in a message from Kryscuk, articulated during early planning stages: "We will have to hit the streets and strike as many blows to the remaining power structure as we can to keep it on the ropes."

Understanding The Ideological Motivations

The link to white supremacist ideologies was a fundamental aspect of their plans. This extremist viewpoint guided their target selection and the overarching goal of their plot.

Recruitment and radicalization efforts were primarily conducted online, where Collins had initially been active on neo-Nazi forums, seeking others who shared their radical beliefs. This digital aspect of their plotting underscores the modern challenges of monitoring and intercepting extremist activities online.

The group viewed their actions as a misguided form of warfare aimed at upending what they perceived as an oppressive power structure that had wronged them and their ideological kin.

Lessons To Learn From This Tragedy

  1. Awareness and monitoring of extremist forums are crucial for early detection of radicalization and planning phases.
  2. Communities must foster inclusive dialogue to thwart the spread of extremist ideologies.
  3. It's important to support de-radicalization initiatives that can reintegrate individuals harboring extremist views.

While these measures can help, it’s important to recognize that crime can occur despite preventive efforts, and the blame should never fall on victims.

Why This Story Matters

This case is a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by domestic terrorism linked to extremist ideologies. It highlights the dangers of radicalization among military personnel and veterans, whose skills can significantly amplify the threat they pose. Moreover, it underscores the importance of vigilant, responsive intelligence and law enforcement efforts to prevent such plots from reaching fruition.

In conclusion, this case not only illuminates the ongoing threat of domestic terrorism but also reinforces the need for comprehensive strategies to counteract the growth of extremist ideologies within communities.  The vigilance of law enforcement and intelligence agencies played a crucial role in preventing a potential catastrophe, illustrating the importance of collaboration in maintaining national security.
