Ex-Husband Commits Double Murder In St. James Residence

A tragic incident unfolded in Long Island as a man fatally shot his ex-wife and her new partner in their St. James residence.

According to the New York Post, the shooting occurred following a contentious divorce between the former couple.

Daniel Coppola, 50, allegedly broke into the million-dollar home of his ex-wife, Kelly Coppola, 50, and her boyfriend, Kenneth Pohlman, 53, late Wednesday night. The incident took place around 11:45 p.m. at 21 Brasswood Road, where the couple was asleep when the attack occurred.

Chilling Details Of The Fatal Shooting

The events leading up to the shooting paint a disturbing picture. Daniel Coppola reportedly instructed his daughter to remain in his car outside the residence before proceeding with the attack. After the shooting, he returned to the vehicle and made a shocking statement to his daughter.

According to Kenneth Pohlman Sr., the father of the male victim, the perpetrator left his companion in the vehicle before concealing himself behind some foliage. Subsequently, the assailant forcibly entered the premises by damaging the door. Once inside, he ascended to the upper level, where he committed the alleged crime.

Pohlman Sr. further revealed the chilling words Coppola allegedly spoke to his daughter after the act:

[He] came back and told his daughter, 'I killed your mother and Kenny.' That's what he told her.

The teenager, seemingly in shock, reached out to her friends via text message, expressing uncertainty about her father's actions and her mother's well-being.

Police Response And Arrest

Following the shooting, Daniel Coppola fled the scene with his daughter. The girl's friends, unable to reach Kelly Coppola, alerted the authorities by calling 911.

Law enforcement officials later apprehended Daniel Coppola at his own St. James residence, located approximately one mile from the crime scene. Detective Lt. Kevin Breyer provided insight into the arrest:

As he's driving her, she is communicating with friends via text saying, 'I don't know what my father did. I don't know how my mother is.'

After his arrest, Coppola was placed under mental evaluation due to suicidal statements he made. The Suffolk County Police Department has charged him with two counts of second-degree murder.

Background Of The Victims And Suspect

Daniel and Kelly Coppola's marriage had dissolved one to two years before the incident, with their divorce proceedings described as highly contentious by Detective Lt. Breyer. Although no active protective order was in place against Daniel Coppola, law enforcement records revealed a previous non-criminal dispute call involving the couple during their married life.

Kenneth Pohlman's relatives shed light on the couple's tumultuous past. Tom Pohlman, the victim's sibling, disclosed that Kelly had reported experiencing abuse at the hands of her ex-husband. The family portrayed Daniel Coppola as a volatile and aggressive individual, hinting at a history of domestic problems between the former partners.

Victims' Lives And Relationships

Kenneth Pohlman had entered into a relationship with Kelly Coppola following the loss of his own wife to cancer several years ago. His family described him as a romantic individual who displayed love letters on his bedroom wall.

The couple shared a six-bedroom, four-bathroom home valued at $1.1 million, and the tragedy occurred there. A friend of Pohlman's, Geoff Boyle, remembered him fondly: "He didn't show up at the gym this morning. I shot him a text and I got no response from him. Now I know why."

Boyle described Pohlman as a "great family man" and an "awesome workout buddy," highlighting the personal loss felt by those who knew the victims.

Lessons To Learn From This Tragedy

In the face of such a tragedy, here are several lessons that can be drawn:

  1. Always monitor the post-divorce emotional state of individuals involved in bitter separations to prevent possible retaliation.
  2. Encourage open communications with family and friends about one's safety and well-being, particularly in situations involving past violence.
  3. No amount of precaution can always prevent crime, but staying vigilant can offer better protection and create a supportive community environment.

Why This Story Matters

This devastating event emphasizes the importance of community awareness and intervention in domestic violence cases. It underscores the need for more resources and support for individuals exiting violent relationships to hopefully prevent such tragedies in the future.

Civil discourse and proactive measures against domestic violence can not only save lives but also foster a safer and more engaged community. The need for robust systems to respond to domestic crises is evident, and this story should act as a stark reminder of the human cost of inaction.

In conclusion, this harrowing incident not only took the lives of Kelly Coppola and Kenneth Pohlman but also left a community grappling with the reality of domestic violence and its deadly impact. This story matters because it's a call to action for all of us to support and protect those who might be victims in their own homes—an urgent reminder of the importance of vigilance, intervention, and empathy.
