In a heartbreaking turn of events, Sgt. Brian LaVigne, a dedicated officer of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, met an untimely death, struck down by an errant driver just one day before his intended retirement, marking the conclusion of an illustrious three-decade career in law enforcement.

The defendant in the case, Travis Garrett, will serve a 45-year prison sentence for second-degree murder in the high-speed crash that claimed  LaVigne's life just one day before his retirement, as People reports.

The initial incident that led to the tragic outcome started on Jan. 11, 2021, at the Paddock Club Apartments. Sheriff’s deputies first arrived on the scene, responding to complaints about Garrett, who was seen erratically throwing belongings from his apartment window and front door. At this point, there wasn't enough cause to arrest Garrett.

About an hour and a half later, deputies were called back to the apartment complex due to further complaints of Garrett's disturbing behavior. This time, he was described as "naked and harassing neighbors," according to Sheriff Chad Connister.

High-Speed Chase Leads to Tragedy

The situation escalated quickly when officers attempted to confront Garrett about his actions. Garrett engaged physically with the deputies, managing to break free and flee in his vehicle.

As Garrett sped away from the scene, his reckless disregard for safety was captured on a dashboard camera. He was recorded accelerating fiercely, running through the apartment’s gates directly into Sgt. LaVigne's vehicle which was stopped at a sign.

She shared, “This senseless crime robbed a family of a tremendous father and husband who deserved a long and happy retirement with the family he built. While this sentence can never bring Sgt. LaVigne back, it ensures this defendant will spend the majority of his life behind bars while allowing the victim’s family a chance at healing without a lengthy trial."
