A Wisconsin mother reappears after over six decades

A decades-old missing persons case in Wisconsin takes an unexpected turn as investigators discover the truth behind a young mother's disappearance.

According to the New York Post, Audrey Backeberg, who vanished from Reedsburg, Wisconsin, in 1962 at age 20, has been found "alive and well," living under a new identity with a different husband after fleeing what police describe as an abusive marriage.

Detective Issac Hanson of the Sauk County Sheriff's Office made the remarkable discovery in March 2025 after reopening the 63-year-old cold case.

Backeberg, now 82, had established a new life outside Wisconsin, completely cutting ties with her past. The case had remained untouched since 2002, with family members fearing the worst about her fate.

Domestic Violence Led to Desperate Escape

Just days before her disappearance, Backeberg had filed a criminal complaint against her then-husband Ronald, whom she had married at age 15.

The complaint detailed severe physical abuse resulting in head injuries and death threats. Former Sauk County sheriff Randy Stammen had previously revealed disturbing details about Ronald's threatening behavior. Multiple witnesses later reported seeing Backeberg at an Indianapolis bus station shortly after she vanished.

Detective Hanson spoke with Backeberg, who confirmed her identity and provided details that matched the case file. She expressed confidence in her decision to leave, though she declined to share her current location or whether she had more children with her new husband. Her original decision to flee stemmed from a desperate need to escape domestic violence.

Detective Hanson shared:

She was very cooperative, answered all my questions. Based on the things that she told me, I think that she is confident in the decision that she made. 'Did what she had to do,' type thing.

Complex Investigation Yields Results

Detective Hanson's investigation involved painstaking research through old documents, microfilms, and extensive interviews with approximately 20 family members and witnesses.

The breakthrough came after he utilized information from an Ancestry.com account connected to Backeberg's sister. Through methodical detective work, Hanson finally located a promising address and made contact via landline telephone.

The discovery has stirred complex emotions among Backeberg's surviving family members. Tragically, one of her children died in 2006, followed shortly by Ronald's death.

Her mother passed away in 2023 without ever learning her daughter's fate. The news of Backeberg's survival has left relatives simultaneously relieved and processing decades of uncertainty.

Legacy of a Cold Case Resolution

The successful resolution of this cold case demonstrates the evolving nature of missing persons investigations and the impact of modern genealogical tools.

Hanson's careful approach to the investigation balanced the need for closure with respect for Backeberg's privacy. His decision not to disclose her current location honors her wish to maintain the new life she built.

Backeberg's story highlights the desperate choices some domestic violence victims face and the lengths they may go to ensure their safety. The case also underscores how improved investigative techniques and digital resources can help solve decades-old mysteries, bringing answers to families who have long wondered about their loved ones' fates.

Final Case Overview

Audrey Backeberg disappeared from Reedsburg, Wisconsin in 1962, leaving behind two children and an allegedly abusive husband. The 20-year-old mother had filed charges of battery and death threats against her husband, Ronald, just days before her disappearance.

Detective Issac Hanson's diligent investigation in 2025 revealed that Backeberg had successfully built a new life under a different identity, finding happiness with a new husband outside Wisconsin.

While her immediate family members never learned her fate during their lifetimes, the case's resolution provides answers to the enduring mystery of her disappearance and confirms her survival against significant odds.
