US Safety Regulators Probe Stalling Issues In Jeep And Ram Vehicles

Unexpected engine stalls have sparked a federal investigation into thousands of Stellantis vehicles, arousing concerns among drivers and industry observers alike.

The Associated Press reported that The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is scrutinizing around 150,000 Ram pickup trucks and Jeep Wagoneer SUVs from the 2022 model year after reports of sudden vehicle shutdowns.

In April 2022, Stellantis responded to issues with the air-fuel mixture in around 131,000 vehicles by initiating a recall. This problem, although significant, did not mark the end of the company’s challenges. Nearly a year later, in July 2023, another critical issue surfaced leading NHTSA to investigate the newer complaints related to vehicle stalling.

The focus of the current investigation is a specific hybrid system integrated into these models—the 5.7-liter Hemi e-Torque mild hybrid system. This innovative system harnesses braking energy, transitioning it into electrical power to support various vehicle components, featuring a 48-volt battery pack and a motor generator that assists the crankshaft during gear shifts.

However, despite its advanced technology, Stellantis has encountered problems. So far, NHTSA has logged 80 complaints from vehicle owners who experienced their engines shutting down, typically at lower speeds, and in some distressing cases, the engines failed to restart.

Investigating The Root Of The Problem

According to the agency, the main task now is "to assess how frequently these stalls occur and what triggers them." Initial evaluations by Stellantis suggest that these incidents might be linked to an electrical issue within the hybrid system.

As part of its commitment to consumer safety and in compliance with regulatory practices, Stellantis is actively collaborating with the investigation. The company has issued a statement urging any owner who notices similar problems to immediately contact their dealership.

"We see this as a critical issue that could potentially compromise driver safety," expressed an NHTSA spokesperson. Echoing the concerns, one affected owner reported, “My vehicle just halted on a busy road; it was quite frightening as I could not restart the engine.”

Stellantis has reassured customers of its dedication to resolving these issues promptly and effectively. Meanwhile, NHTSA continues to compile data from other drivers who have experienced similar troubles.

Broader Impact On Stellantis And Auto Safety

These issues strike a challenging note for Stellantis, potentially impacting its reputation and customer trust.

The investigation not only highlights specific problems with the 5.7-liter Hemi e-Torque mild hybrid system but also casts a broader spotlight on vehicle safety and reliability.

This story holds significant relevance not just for Stellantis vehicle owners, but for the broader automotive industry. It underscores the potential challenges and pitfalls of integrating advanced hybrid technologies in modern vehicles.

Moreover, it stresses the importance of robust testing and quality control in preventing safety issues that could adversely affect consumers.

Lessons To Learn From This Tragedy

1. Routine Maintenance and Vigilance: Regular check-ups can prevent or identify problems early on. Vehicle owners should not only rely on recall notices but be proactive in maintaining their vehicles.

2. Awareness of Vehicle Performance: Recognize the signs of potential problems, such as unexpected noises or changes in vehicle behavior, and address them without delay.

3. Safety Preparedness: Always be prepared for potential vehicle malfunctions. Keep safety tools and know emergency procedures.

Remember, while preventative measures can reduce risk, anyone can be impacted by unforeseen vehicle malfunctions.

In conclusion, the ongoing NHTSA investigation into Stellantis’s Ram and Jeep models is a critical reminder of the challenges at the intersection of automotive technology and safety.

Both the company and regulatory bodies are working to understand and rectify the issues, underscoring their commitment to driver safety and vehicle reliability. The outcome of this probe will likely influence future industry standards and practices, emphasizing the need for constant vigilance and improvement in vehicle design and function.
