Cal State Fullerton athlete dies weeks after scooter crash with truck

In a heartbreaking loss for the collegiate sports community, a promising young soccer player from Cal State Fullerton has succumbed to injuries sustained in a horrific e-scooter accident involving a box truck, leaving her family, teammates, and university in mourning.

Turner died on Nov. 7 after being critically injured on Sept. 27 when she and her teammate Ashlyn Gwynn were struck by a Ford Econoline E350 box truck while riding electric scooters near campus. According to the New York Post source, the crash occurred around 7 p.m. on Associated Road as the pair headed to a men's soccer game, with police noting the scooters were in the second lane at the time.

Lauren Turner, a 19-year-old sophomore, fought for nearly six weeks before passing away, highlighting the dangers of shared roadways for vulnerable riders. The Fullerton Police Department reported that the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, and no arrests have been made as alcohol or drugs are not believed to have factored into the incident. Turner suffered severe head trauma and was placed in the ICU, eventually falling into a coma, while Gwynn was also severely injured and initially treated in intensive care.

Circumstances of the Tragic Accident

Turner and Gwynn were riding their electric scooters in the same lane as the box truck on Associated Road, just north of the Cal State Fullerton campus, when the collision occurred near the intersection with Yorba Linda Blvd. Satellite images indicate a bike lane dividing the right turn lane from others, but the teammates were positioned in the second lane, according to police statements.

Video from the scene showed electric scooters scattered in the road as investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash. The accident unfolded in the evening hours, disrupting what should have been a routine trip to support their university's men's team.

No evidence suggests impairment on the driver's part, and the cooperative nature of the truck operator has aided the ongoing investigation. Officials have not released further details on potential charges, leaving the community awaiting clarity on accountability for the incident.

Lauren Turner's Life and Achievements

As a native of Tustin, California, Turner played in all 20 matches during her freshman year, scoring one goal and providing one assist for the Titans women's soccer team. In her sophomore season, she appeared in all 10 matches before the crash, starting in eight and logging 595 minutes on the field.

Her family described her as someone who "approached everything she did with heart and joy," noting she was "funny, full of life, and had a gift for making people laugh and feel at ease." They added that "her laughter was a reflection of the joy God placed in her heart," emphasizing her role as a dedicated player known for encouragement and determination.

Turner's teammates remembered her as "the funniest, most charismatic, and loving teammate you could ever ask for," who was "the first to celebrate other people’s wins." The team stated that "the impact she made on the Titans women’s soccer program is immeasurable," declaring her "our No. 5 Forever" in a heartfelt tribute.

Teammate Ashlyn Gwynn's Injuries

Ashlyn Gwynn, a sophomore teammate, was severely injured in the same crash and initially placed in the ICU for treatment. Her family announced on Oct. 30 via GoFundMe that she had been moved to the "Step Down" unit, indicating progress in her recovery from the traumatic event.

The collision left Gwynn battling significant injuries, though specifics beyond the initial ICU stay have not been detailed publicly. As a fellow rider en route to the men's game, her involvement underscores the shared risks faced by the athletes in what began as an ordinary outing.

Gwynn's transition out of intensive care marks a positive step, but the long-term effects of her injuries remain unclear. The incident has bonded the team in support, with tributes extending to both players during the season.

Lessons to Learn

Tragedies like this underscore how even a short trip close to campus can quickly turn into a life-altering—or life-ending—event. Here are some takeaways we can all learn from:

1. Use designated lanes where possible: If bike lanes or scooter lanes are available, it's essential to use them. While the facts surrounding this collision are still being evaluated, knowing road layouts and sticking to designated areas can reduce risk.

2. Visibility is key: Traveling at twilight or after dark, especially on busy roads, increases the danger of being missed by other drivers. Bright clothing, lights, and reflective gear can dramatically improve visibility.

3. Stay cautious, always: Even when all rules are followed, accidents can occur. As this story reminds us, we must never blame the victims. Safety can reduce risk, but it cannot fully eliminate it.

Why This Story Matters

This story is a sobering reminder of how fragile life is—especially for young people with their futures ahead of them. It holds significance for the Fullerton community, shining a painful spotlight on traffic safety and scooter use in and around campuses. The university now must reckon with the safety of students commuting in modern ways and look at what more can be done to protect them. Most of all, Lauren Turner’s story is a call to cherish every day and advocate for safer environments for students everywhere.

Conclusion

Lauren Turner, a 19-year-old sophomore at Cal State Fullerton and a talented soccer player, passed away on Nov. 7 after weeks in a coma following a Sept. 27 collision with a box truck while riding an electric scooter. Her teammate, Ashlyn Gwynn, was also seriously injured in the crash. Both were heading to a campus men’s soccer game at the time of the incident. The truck driver remained on scene, and no substances were believed to be involved. Turner’s teammates honored her with wristbands and a heartfelt commitment to carry her spirit through competition, while friends, family, and community members planned a candlelight vigil to celebrate her enduring legacy of joy, kindness, and determination.
