Man arrested for alleged ICE firebomb threats during anti-Trump protest

An upstate New York man was arrested in Manhattan after he allegedly bragged about a plan to attack federal agents with firebombs during a large-scale protest.

The incident began when David Cox, 54, allegedly told a stranger at a gas station that he had weapons and intended to “fight ICE agents” at a rally, according to the New York Post. Police later apprehended him in New York City on Saturday afternoon amid a massive demonstration in Midtown.

Cox was charged with making a terroristic threat, false report of terrorism, and making a threat of mass harm. Despite his alleged claims, police confirmed that no firebombs or weapons were found inside his vehicle at the time of his arrest.

The Alleged Threat And Subsequent Arrest

The chain of events was set in motion on Friday night at a Kwik Fil gas station in Owego, approximately 198 miles from New York City. It was there that Cox allegedly bragged to a stranger that he had weapons stored in his trunk for an impending attack.

The bystander who heard the threat promptly reported it to the police after Cox departed from the gas station. This crucial tip from an innocent party initiated the law enforcement response that led to the suspect's capture the following day.

The New York Police Department successfully tracked down the Newark Valley resident after his vehicle was identified by a license plate reader. He was taken into custody around 2:25 p.m. on Saturday as an estimated 100,000 people were demonstrating nearby.

Charges Filed Despite Lack Of Weapons

Following his arrest, authorities charged Cox with several serious offenses related to his alleged statements. The charges include making a terroristic threat and a false report of terrorism, reflecting the gravity of his purported plan.

A critical detail in the case is that a search of Cox's vehicle yielded no weapons or firebombs. This finding directly contradicts the claims he allegedly made to the stranger at the gas station the previous night.

The case highlights that charges related to terrorism can be pursued based on credible threats alone, even in the absence of the actual means to carry them out. The alleged intent and communication of a threat of mass harm formed the basis for the legal action against him.

Protests Erupt Across The Nation

Cox's arrest took place against the backdrop of the nationwide "No Kings" protests, which saw tens of thousands rally in Manhattan and other major cities. The demonstrators gathered to voice their opposition to President Trump and his administration's policies.

Protesters specifically called for the president to resign and directed sharp criticism toward U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Some signs and chants reportedly compared the federal agency to the KKK, highlighting the intense anti-ICE sentiment at the rallies.

While the demonstration in New York City was massive, with over 100,000 participants, it remained peaceful, and no arrests were reported. However, the situation was markedly different in other parts of the country, where protests descended into chaos.

Lessons to Learn

Criminal incidents tied to protests offer lessons on awareness and precaution in large gatherings. Here are three key takeaways from this case:

  1. Report suspicious behavior immediately: The anonymous gas station customer made a critical decision by notifying law enforcement. Quick reporting allowed police to intercept a potential threat before harm could be done.
  2. Take verbal threats seriously: Even when no weapons are found, verbal declarations of intent to commit violence—especially in public or crowded situations—are a legitimate cause for concern. Law enforcement must remain proactive when lives may be at risk.
  3. Stay alert during organized protests: Whether participating or observing, large-scale events carry a risk of unforeseen danger. While peaceful expression is a protected right, being aware of your surroundings can help reduce vulnerability. Still, it's important to remember that no precaution guarantees safety, and victims should never be blamed.

Why This Story Matters

This story highlights the critical role of community vigilance in preventing potential acts of violence. At a time when political protests draw massive crowds, a single tip can make the difference between safety and tragedy. It also demonstrates the constant challenge law enforcement faces in balancing civil liberties with public protection. The case underscores how serious threats—even those without follow-through—can carry heavy legal consequences. Above all, it reveals the volatile environment surrounding national discourse on immigration and government authority, adding urgency to ongoing public debates.

In conclusion, David Cox’s arrest during a massive protest in Manhattan stemmed from a disturbing claim made at an upstate gas station just hours earlier. His alleged threat to launch a firebomb attack against ICE agents triggered a swift law enforcement response, culminating in his detention at the rally. Though no weapons were found, Cox now faces multiple terrorism-related charges. While New York City’s protest remained peaceful, violence in Portland, Los Angeles, and Illinois highlighted the tensions surrounding the “No Kings” movement and the polarizing issues at its center.
