Country songwriter Brett James, wife, stepdaughter killed in small plane crash

The tightly-knit Nashville music community is reeling after Grammy-winning songwriter Brett James, his wife, and his stepdaughter were all killed in a tragic plane crash in North Carolina, as the New York Post reports.

James, 57, his wife Melody Wilson, 59, and her daughter Meryl Maxwell Wilson, 28, died on Sept. 18, when their private aircraft crashed into a field shortly after takeoff en route from Nashville to an unknown destination.

Afternoon crash kills 3

Authorities say the single-engine Cirrus SR22T piloted by James went down shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday near Franklin, a small town in western North Carolina. The aircraft had departed from John C. Tune Airport in Nashville earlier that day.

The crash occurred in an open field not far from Iotla Valley Elementary School. Officials confirmed that no students or faculty were harmed on the ground. First responders were dispatched immediately, but none of the three passengers on board survived. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are working to determine the cause of the crash.

Beloved songwriter remembered

James had built a highly respected name in Nashville and beyond for his work on chart-topping country hits. Over his decades-long career, he wrote for artists including Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley, and Jason Aldean, as well as pop stars like Bon Jovi and Nick Jonas.

In 2020, he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, a testament to his contributions to the music industry. His material was placed multiple times on Billboard’s country charts, and his influence extended into rock and pop music circles.

Despite his public career, James often portrayed himself as a devoted family man on social media. In his final Instagram post on June 16, 2025, he shared a photo with his four adult children from a previous marriage and captioned it with joy about Father’s Day celebrations.

Daughter's birthday just celebrated

Heartbreakingly, Melody Wilson had posted on Instagram just one day before the crash to celebrate her daughter’s birthday. “How Blessed am I to be your Momma,” she wrote on Sept. 17, doting on Meryl with affectionate words and appreciation for her growth.

On that same day, Meryl shared that she was 28 years old and had reached a personal milestone -- 142 days sober. She expressed gratitude for her journey and happiness to be alive in her post. The emotional weight of their final moments online has left friends and fans anguished, showing the stark contrast between celebration and tragedy. The family had been flying together the very next day when the plane went down.

Joyful lives cut short

James and Wilson were married in August 2022, according to past posts on her Instagram. She wrote of their wedding, saying, "Lucky me," expressing great joy in their union. The couple resided in a $2 million home in Nashville since at least 2020, and often showcased moments from their elegant lifestyle. Posts frequently featured golf outings, tropical vacations, and intimate portraits of family life.

The loss of all three individuals at once has stunned their personal and professional communities. Musician Jessi Alexander, a friend of James, expressed that “Music Row will never be the same.”

Investigation continues

Federal officials from the FAA and NTSB arrived at the crash site shortly after the incident and launched a joint investigation. At this time, no details about the aircraft’s mechanical status or pilot communications before the crash have been released.

The Cirrus SR22T, a high-performance single-engine aircraft, is popular among private pilots for personal flights. No distress call has yet been confirmed by authorities.

Reporters following the case say updates from investigators may take weeks or months as agencies review data, flight logs, and any recovered wreckage from the crash site.

Lessons to learn

1. Private aviation carries unique risks: While convenient and often faster than commercial travel, private flights require rigorous safety procedures and up-to-date training. Even experienced pilots can face mechanical failures or weather-related dangers. Understanding these risks helps travelers make informed decisions.

2. Share your travel plans with loved ones: When traveling by private aircraft or other non-commercial means, it’s wise to share flight details with someone you trust. Knowing your location in emergencies can make crucial differences for first responders and investigators.

3. Understand that tragedy can strike even the most prepared: There is no indication that anything improper occurred in this incident. Despite the best precautions, unexpected events occur. It's important to respect the victims and avoid misplaced blame while learning what we can for our own awareness.

Why this story matters

This heartbreaking story highlights the deep connections between public figures, their close relationships, and the communities they impact. Brett James wasn't just a songwriter -- he was a husband, father, and mentor across the Nashville creative industry.

His sudden passing, alongside his wife and stepdaughter, reminds us how quickly life can change. The story is also a wake-up call about the stakes in small aircraft travel.

For the music world and the families touched by their lives, this loss is immeasurable -- and it merits both reflection and care as we honor their memory.
