A devastating collision at a Richmond Hill daycare center resulted in the death of an 18-month-old boy and left multiple children injured when an SUV plowed through the building's front window.

According to The Toronto Star, the tragic incident occurred around 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Roots Early Education Academy, where 96 children were present at the time. The toddler was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital, while another child remains in serious condition.

York Regional Police arrested a 70-year-old male driver at the scene and charged him with dangerous operation causing death and two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm. Initial police reports indicate the crash was not intentional, as the vehicle was in the parking lot before inexplicably accelerating through the building's facade.

Emergency responders arrived to find the Hyundai Ioniq 9 electric SUV had crashed through multiple rooms, leaving a trail of destruction. The vehicle smashed through drywall, scattering children's furniture and educational materials across the classroom floor.

Five children and three adult staff members were transported to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Police quickly established a reunification point at nearby Thornbush Court to help distraught parents locate their children amid the chaos.

Through the shattered glass window, observers could see overturned furniture, including a small yellow chair, bookcase, and a basket labeled "PUZZLES" strewn about the classroom. Photos of children, a clothing identification poster, and Disney character decorations still clung to the damaged walls.

Richmond Hill Mayor David West described the incident as "profoundly unsettling" in a social media post. The mayor, himself a parent, extended his deepest condolences to affected families and staff members.
