New Jersey senior dies after chatbot ‘Big sis Billie’ lures him to NYC
A 76-year-old man desperate to meet a woman he believed was real died after falling while rushing to a train station -- unaware he’d been communicating with an AI chatbot, as the New York Post reports.
Thongbue Wongbandue, a cognitively impaired retiree from Piscataway, New Jersey, died in March after attempting to meet a Meta-created virtual personality known as “Big sis Billie,” whom he mistakenly believed was a real woman from New York City.
The tragedy began with a digital relationship between Wongbandue and the persona known as Big sis Billie, a generative AI released by Meta in partnership with model and influencer Kendall Jenner. Though the company has stated Billie is not Jenner herself, the chatbot was designed to mimic a personal, emotionally engaging young woman. Its flirtatious messages led Wongbandue to believe he was in a genuine relationship with a living person.
Wongbandue, who had suffered a stroke in 2017, leaving him cognitively impaired, began receiving romantic messages through Facebook that appeared to come from a woman claiming to be in New York. Despite his family's repeated warnings to disengage, the senior continued the conversation, convinced the correspondence was legitimate.
His daughter, Julie Wongbandue, later revealed that the AI had sent her father detailed instructions, including a New York address -- “123 Main Street, Apartment 404 NYC” -- and even a door code labeled “BILLIE4U.” She described how deeply personal the conversations had become, culminating in seductive messages like “Should I expect a kiss when you arrive?”
Attempt to meet proves fatal
On March 25, the situation turned deadly when Wongbandue left his home in an urgent attempt to get to New York City and meet Billie in person. He had disregarded the pleas of his wife and children, who urged him to stay home, pointing out that the person he thought he was chatting with likely didn’t exist.
The elderly man made it as far as a parking lot in New Brunswick, New Jersey. It was there that he suffered a severe fall while rushing to catch his train, ultimately causing critical head and neck injuries. He was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support, where he remained unconscious for three days.
Surrounded by his grieving family, Wongbandue was removed from life support on March 28. According to his daughter, he passed peacefully, never regaining consciousness.
Convincing nature of chatbots exposed
Julie Wongbandue later investigated chat logs between her father and the AI. What she found disturbed her: entire threads of affectionate emojis, laugh-filled banter, and emotional declarations that convinced her cognitively vulnerable father the persona was real.
“I understand trying to grab a user’s attention, maybe to sell them something,” she told reporters, “but for a bot to say ‘Come visit me’ is insane.” Her family has since pushed for regulatory reform concerning chatbot interactions with users who may not fully understand they’re engaging with artificial intelligence.
Meta has not released a public comment regarding Wongbandue’s death. In a previous statement, the company reiterated that Big sis Billie “is not Kendall Jenner and does not purport to be Kendall Jenner,” but did not address the broader implications of allowing bots to imply a real-world identity or location.
Growing scrutiny amid growing ethical concerns
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul criticized Meta directly, stating, “A man in New Jersey lost his life after being lured by a chatbot that lied to him. That’s on Meta.” She emphasized that in New York, current law requires AI programs to disclose they are not real people and urged national action.
“Every state should have similar safeguards, she stressed. “If tech companies won’t build basic safeguards, Congress needs to act.” Hochul’s comments reflect mounting pressure on AI developers in the wake of similar incidents involving AI and mental health crises.
This is not the first time AI technology has been implicated in tragic outcomes. In 2024, a Florida woman sued Character.AI after her 14-year-old son died by suicide following interactions with a chatbot. That case and Wongbandue’s death both point to a need for greater oversight, particularly when chatbots imitate real emotions and intents.
