Helicopter crash into Mississippi river barge leaves two dead

A helicopter crash leading to a fiery barge incident occurred on the Mississippi River, claiming two lives and forcing a temporary shutdown of river traffic.

According to Fox2 Now, a Hughes 369D helicopter collided with a barge on the Mississippi River near Alton, Illinois, on Thursday, after hitting transmission lines. Tragically, the crash resulted in the deaths of both individuals aboard.

The accident took place at 11:05 a.m. near Maple Island, just north of St. Louis, close to the Melvin Price Locks and Dam.

Following the collision with the transmission lines, the aircraft plummeted onto the barge, igniting a fire on impact.

Helicopter Maintenance Work Ends in Disaster

Both victims were aboard the Hughes 369D, engaged in maintenance duties on tower lighting and marker balls for transmission lines.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported among those on the barge at the time of the crash. However, the fire on the vessel and the fallen transmission lines necessitated immediate action.

By 1:15 p.m., authorities closed the river to traffic to manage risks associated with the crash and the ensuing fire. Emergency responders from various districts in Missouri and Illinois were promptly on the scene to address the situation.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have now taken the lead in the aftermath investigation. Investigators are set to arrive the following Friday to begin a detailed examination of the site.

J.F. Electric, the employer of one of the crash victims, confirmed involvement in the incident. The company expressed deep regret and compassion for the families affected, acknowledging the gravity of the loss.

It is with deep sadness that we confirm a serious incident occurred earlier today involving one of our employees and a subcontractor. Tragically, the incident resulted in the passing of both the employee and subcontractor. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we are not releasing additional details at this time. Our thoughts are with their loved ones, colleagues, and all those affected by this loss.

Ameren, another entity involved, also expressed its condolences. Officials from Ameren stated that they are committed to cooperating with the ongoing investigation conducted by the NTSB and FAA.

Eyewitnesses Detail Moments Leading to Collision

Local resident Adam Briggs described observing the helicopter just before the crash. He noted that it carried a safety marker ball, likely on its way to complete maintenance tasks related to the high-tension lines.

“He had one of those balls on the side of the helicopter,” Briggs recounted, adding additional insight into the specific activity undertaken by the crew before the collision. The sight of the crash and ensuing fire made a strong emotional impact on him.

The ongoing investigation could take up to two years for a final report to be compiled, but a preliminary understanding of the events is expected within 30 days. The public is encouraged to share any information with the NTSB that might aid their efforts.

The incident highlights the risks faced by those in the field performing maintenance work on essential infrastructure components. The tragic deaths underscore the potential hazards that accompany such tasks, even with safety measures in place.

Efforts to restore river operations were promptly initiated after the river's temporary closure. The authorities aim to ensure the safety and continuity of activities in the area as the investigation continues.
