Girl, 9, dies after being pulled from Hersheypark wave pool

A day meant for summer fun turned tragic at Hersheypark in Pennsylvania after a young girl was pulled from a wave pool unresponsive, according to witnesses and officials.

A nine-year-old girl died Thursday after experiencing a medical emergency while swimming in a wave pool at Hersheypark, despite rapid rescue and CPR efforts by lifeguards and paramedics, as the New York Post reports.

The incident unfolded on a sweltering July day as families packed the water park section of Hersheypark. Witnesses reported the temperature climbing to 92 degrees as parkgoers cooled off in the wave pool, one of the park’s main attractions. Amid the crowd, one guest saw a harrowing sight -- a child being dragged out of the water, her body limp.

“It was 92 degrees and my family had just arrived when I saw a child being pulled, limp, from the wave pool,” one witness said. Park lifeguards immediately sprang into action, initiating CPR on site. Security and medical staff surrounded the area as onlookers were held back, some turning away in distress.

The young girl received medical attention on a gurney positioned near the scene. One lifeguard performed CPR with visible intensity, witnesses said, remaining focused for several minutes before stopping, clearly shaken. “The crowd let out an audible sigh,” another guest said. “Staff tried their best to shield us from the trauma, but the weight of the moment was overwhelming.”

Swift emergency response unfolds

Within minutes of identifying the emergency, Hersheypark’s trained staff worked quickly to manage the crisis. According to officials, lifeguards were the first to respond, rescuing the girl from the wave pool and attempting life-saving measures on the ground. Medical personnel and on-site first responders coordinated care while an ambulance was called to the scene.

John Lawn, CEO of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, acknowledged the efforts of his team. “From the moment our lifeguard team recognized that a child was in distress, they performed an immediate rescue,” he said. “Our lifeguards, on-site first responders, and medical personnel provided continuous life-saving efforts.”

Despite these efforts, the child was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The Dauphin County Coroner’s Office arrived to investigate the cause of death, which had yet to be disclosed as of Saturday.

Lawn offered the company's condolences to the family, stating, “Our hearts break for this child and the child’s family. We extend our deepest condolences for their loss.”

Wave pool closed in wake of tragedy

Hersheypark officials closed the wave pool on Friday out of respect for the incident and to allow for continued investigation. The rest of the park remained open and operating under regular hours. Police are working with both Hersheypark and the coroner’s office to uncover what led to the girl's medical emergency.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the girl, pending notification of her family. The cause of the incident remains undetermined. However, one witness, reflecting on what they saw, said they heard it may have been “a medical emergency, not a typical drowning.”

Such uncertainty has prompted concern and speculation among the public, especially on social media, where guests and observers have shared thoughts and condolences. Several park visitors said they were too shaken to stay after the incident and chose to leave early. “Normally, after a day at Hersheypark, I come home exhausted,” one guest said. “But last night, I couldn’t sleep. The image of that little child and the heartbreak of the family is something I’ll never forget.”

Lessons to learn

Even in places designed for leisure and safety, emergencies can unfold in moments with devastating consequences. The tragedy at Hersheypark offers important reminders for families and public venue operators alike:

1. Always monitor children closely in crowded water environments. Even strong swimmers can face difficulties in wave pools, where motion, crowd density, and heat can complicate a situation. Guardians should remain vigilant even when lifeguards are present.

2. Learn how to spot signs of distress early. Drowning doesn’t always look like what you see in movies. It's often silent, with individuals unable to call for help. Knowing what to look for allows for swifter responses.

3. Understand that tragedies are never the fault of the victim. Emergencies can happen despite precautions, and no single lesson can guarantee safety. Blame should never be placed on those who suffer losses, especially children and their families.

Why this story matters

The loss of a child in a public space meant for joy sends shockwaves through communities.

Stories like this underscore the importance of preparedness, awareness, and compassion in the face of unexpected tragedy.

It's a powerful reminder that safety must always be at the forefront, even in places we assume to be secure and supervised.
