South Carolina teacher charged with abuse of 14-year-old boy reveals pregnancy in court

A stunning revelation rocked an Anderson County courtroom when Nicole Ballew Callaham, 33, a former elementary school teacher accused of molesting a teenage boy, announced she is expecting a child. Her attorney dropped the bombshell during a dramatic bond hearing that left spectators stunned.

According to the Daily Mail, Callaham turned herself in to authorities last week after being charged with sexually abusing Grant Strickland when he was 14 years old, between 2021 and 2023. The victim, now 18, waived his anonymity to speak publicly about the ordeal.

Her attorney William Epps III informed Judge Matthew Hawley that his client is "eight to nine weeks pregnant" while requesting bond, arguing she needs proper prenatal care that she hasn't received in custody. The shocking announcement came as Callaham appeared in court wearing a red prison jumpsuit, accompanied by her fiancé and family members.

Victim Breaks Years of Silence

Grant Strickland demonstrated remarkable courage in coming forward about the alleged abuse that he says began when he was just 14 years old. The young man decided to report the incidents after turning 18, having spent time processing the trauma.

According to authorities, Callaham first met Strickland at an audition for a Legally Blonde musical production which she directed. She would later sign him out of school and supervise after-school activities, using these opportunities to allegedly perpetrate the abuse.

Strickland spoke emotionally outside the courthouse, saying: "I would never want someone to go through what I went through, I don't think most people could be strong enough to survive it. Because I almost didn't." He expressed hope that sharing his story would raise awareness about male victims of sexual abuse.

Judge Sets Strict Bond Conditions

Judge Hawley carefully weighed the circumstances before granting Callaham's release on bond, implementing multiple restrictions to ensure public safety. The conditions reflect the serious nature of the charges while acknowledging her pregnancy.

The judge set bond at $120,000 and ordered Callaham to remain under house arrest with GPS monitoring. She is prohibited from coming within one mile of Strickland's residence, establishing what the court termed a "red zone."

Additionally, Callaham must undergo both mental and physical evaluations to determine her fitness to stand trial. These comprehensive conditions aim to balance the rights of the accused with protecting the alleged victim and community.

Multiple Jurisdictions Pursue Charges

The case has drawn attention from multiple law enforcement agencies as the alleged crimes reportedly occurred across different jurisdictions. This has resulted in a complex legal situation for the former teacher.

The Greenville Police Department has brought similar charges, claiming the conduct extended into their jurisdiction while Strickland attended school there. Callaham faces eight counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and four counts of unlawful conduct towards a child.

The Clemson City Police Department has also joined the investigation, though specific charges from their jurisdiction haven't been detailed yet.

Why This Story Matters

This case sheds light on the rarely discussed subject of female teacher abuse against male students, challenging outdated assumptions about abuse dynamics. Raising awareness ensures victims like Grant Strickland can come forward without shame. The story forces us to confront uncomfortable truths within educational institutions and reinforces the importance of protecting minors under any supervision.

Future Legal Proceedings Await

The shocking pregnancy revelation has added another layer of complexity to an already sensitive case involving a former educator accused of betraying her position of trust. Callaham's attorney maintains her presumed innocence as she awaits trial.

If released on bond, Callaham will be transported to Greenville County for a separate bond hearing to address charges in that jurisdiction. The multiple investigations across different jurisdictions suggest a potentially lengthy legal process ahead.
