Toddler found dead inside car after dad allegedly drank and forgot her

According to the New York Post, a 1-year-old girl died in extreme temperatures after being left inside a vehicle for nine hours by her intoxicated father in Madisonville, Louisiana.

Authorities say the heartbreaking incident occurred on Sunday during a scorching heat wave that pushed temperatures to about 105 degrees Fahrenheit—the area's hottest day of the year. Sheriff’s officials believe Joseph Boatman, 32, had been drinking before putting his child in the car earlier that morning.

Investigators from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office report that Boatman picked up his daughter from a relative just after 2 a.m. and placed her in her car seat. He allegedly drove to a nearby location and left the toddler strapped into her seat as he went inside and failed to return. The girl was not discovered until nearly 10 hours later.

Extreme Heat and Alcohol Reported in Timeline

According to authorities, Boatman had consumed multiple alcoholic drinks before retrieving his daughter in the early hours of Sunday morning. The child remained in the vehicle unattended for nine hours as outside temperatures continued to rise. The car was parked in direct sunlight with no active cooling systems, police said.

It wasn’t until around noon, at the height of the day’s heat, that a family member found the child unresponsive inside the car. First responders were called immediately, but by the time paramedics arrived at the scene, the 1-year-old had already succumbed to heat exposure.

“This is a devastating loss that no family ever wants to face,” said Sheriff Randy Smith of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office. He described the case as the result of “compromised judgment” and emphasized the dangers of leaving any child in a vehicle, especially during high-heat conditions.

Father Booked on Murder Charge After Investigation

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit quickly began investigating the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. Based on evidence and witness interviews, detectives arrested Boatman shortly after the child was discovered. He was later charged with second-degree murder.

Boatman remains in custody as of June 10, with his bail set at $750,000. Officials have not confirmed whether he has retained legal counsel. A court date for his next appearance has not been scheduled, according to authorities.

Investigators believe Boatman's level of alcohol consumption may have played a significant role in his failure to remember his daughter was in the car. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the combination of impaired judgment and dangerous heat created a tragic and preventable scenario.

Child Death in Hot Car Raises Alarm

This specific case has renewed focus on the dangers of vehicle heat exposure, especially in Southern states where summer temperatures can reach deadly levels quickly. Officials warn that the inside of a vehicle can become significantly hotter than the outside in a matter of minutes.

Sheriff Smith issued a stern warning to caregivers about the severe risks involved. “When a child is left in a vehicle, especially on a day when the heat index climbs over 100 degrees, the outcome can turn deadly in a matter of minutes,” he said.

The incident has shocked the local community of Madisonville, a town that rarely sees such extreme and tragic events. Grief counselors and local organizations are reportedly working with the family as they process the loss.

Lessons to Learn From This Tragedy

Stories like this serve as painful reminders of the irreversible consequences of impaired decision-making and heat-related dangers. Here are important lessons everyone should take away from this tragic event:

1. Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle. No matter the time of year, temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly. Even a few minutes can be devastating when outdoor heat levels are high.

2. Do not operate a vehicle under the influence, especially when transporting children. Impaired judgment, memory lapses, and dangerous actions are all common consequences of alcohol consumption, and they can lead to fatal outcomes.

3. Create reminders when transporting children. Especially during late-night or early-morning routines, consider leaving visual cues in the front seat or setting alarms as a safeguard. Still, no tip is foolproof, and it's important to recognize that crime and mistake can tragically affect anyone, and victims should never be blamed.

Why This Story Matters

This incident highlights the urgent need for awareness about hot car deaths and impaired caretaking. It only takes a few moments for tragedy to unfold, particularly involving children and extreme weather. For Louisiana residents and others in warm climates, the story is a sobering example of how quickly circumstances can lead to unimaginable loss. Community action, safety education, and policy changes may all play a role in preventing future tragedies. The death of an innocent child is something no community should have to endure. Stories like these must serve as wake-up calls to all parents and caregivers.

Conclusion

On June 8, 2025, a 1-year-old girl tragically died in Madisonville, Louisiana, after being left inside a hot car for nine hours during extreme heat by her father, Joseph Boatman. Authorities say Boatman, who had been drinking before the incident, left the child in the vehicle after picking her up around 2 a.m. The girl was not found until nearly noon that day when she was discovered unresponsive by a family member. Boatman was arrested by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office and charged with second-degree murder. He currently remains in jail on a $750,000 bond as the investigation continues.
