Newly Identified Island Parasite Menaces Native California Foxes

San Miguel Island, a picturesque locale off the coast of California, is facing a biological crisis. The introduction of a deadly parasite threatens its native island foxes.

A recently discovered parasite, the "hook-headed" Pachysentis canicola, decimates the island fox population because of its destructive presence within the foxes' intestines, as the Daily Mail reports.

In 2012, researchers on San Miguel Island discovered the parasite Pachysentis canicola after observing numerous native animals appearing emaciated or dead.

This marked the first identification of the parasite in this region. Investigations indicated that the parasite resides in the intestines of its hosts, leading to severe erosion and inflammation that ultimately result in death if the parasite is not removed.

Impact of Severe Drought on Fox Populations

The dire situation was perhaps worsened by a severe drought on the island, which likely exacerbated the effects of the parasitic infestation on the island’s fox population.

Autopsy results and continuous monitoring of the foxes since the discovery of the parasite uncovered that many foxes were in poor body condition and had low weights due to the parasite.

Alejandro Aleuy, a biology professor at Florida Atlantic University, has raised concerns regarding the impact on the fox population, emphasizing the parasite's significant threat.

Complex Challenges of Infestation and Conservation

Aleuy explained the dynamics of the crisis, stating, "It's like the perfect storm. You have an island full of foxes, a severe drought, and this new pathogenic parasite showing up. That might have caused the foxes to decline dramatically.”

The island fox species had only recently been removed from the US Endangered Species Act in 2016 after a successful recovery from a population decline during the early 2000s and now faces this new existential threat.

Possible Origins and Spread of Parasite

There are uncertainties concerning how Pachysentis canicola reached the island. It may have been inadvertently introduced during the captive breeding program that helped recover fox populations or might have existed undetected on the island for a long time.

"We can’t be 100 percent certain it’s invasive, but it’s very likely," remarked Aleuy about the parasite's origins.

So far, the parasite has not been found in other fox subspecies on neighboring Channel Islands, such as the ones on Santa Catalina Island, which remain protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Researchers are exploring potential intermediate hosts for the parasite, a critical step for understanding its lifecycle.

Potential Factors Behind Rising Fox Mortality

Additionally, Aleuy noted the situation's complexity, saying, "It's very hard to disentangle the environment and the parasite from the population of foxes. These are all underlying mechanisms that we need to research more in detail." Overpopulation might also be contributing to the dilemma as the fox population may have reached the island's carrying capacity, though this capacity is not definitively known.

Researchers plan to continue monitoring the situation and studying the parasite's lifecycle to provide wildlife managers with vital information to combat this crisis effectively. Understanding how the parasite thrives and spreads is essential to prevent further devastation of the native fox species.
