Teen Held After Deceased Newborn Found in Idaho Baby Box

A tragic misuse of Idaho's Safe Haven Baby Box was uncovered with the discovery of a deceased newborn, leading to the arrest of 18-year-old Angel N. Newberry.

An investigation into the illegal abandonment of a deceased infant in Blackfoot, Idaho, led to the arrest of a teenager under grave circumstances, as Breitbart reports.

On Oct. 13, the staff at Grove Creek Medical Center in Blackfoot were alerted by an alarm from the state's only Safe Haven Baby Box. Upon checking the device, they found a baby girl wrapped in a blanket, already deceased, with the placenta still attached, indicating the child had recently been born.

The Blackfoot Police Department swiftly initiated an investigation, discovering that the baby had not died upon being placed in the box, but had been deceased before abandonment.

The facility's baby box, a temperature-controlled incubator designed to alert hospital staff instantly upon a baby's placement, is meant for the safe, anonymous surrender of unharmed and healthy infants up to 30 days old.

Following the identification of the person responsible, Angel N. Newberry of Twin Falls was apprehended under a felony Bingham County arrest warrant for failing to report the death of a baby. The arrest was executed without incident, and Newberry was subsequently transported to Bingham County Jail.

Legal Framework Surrounding Safe Haven Laws

Idaho's Safe Haven law dictates that infants surrendered must be unharmed. This case, however, highlights a severe misunderstanding or misuse of the law intended to protect newborns from abandonment. Monica Kelsey, founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, confirmed that the baby's death before surrender breaches the law's requirements, making this act a clear violation.

The introduction of the baby box at Grove Creek Medical Center earlier in July followed Idaho lawmakers amending the state's Safe Haven Baby Act to allow such facilities.

This amendment was passed unanimously and signed by Governor Brad Little on July 1, making the installation at the Grove Creek Medical Center the first and only one in Idaho.

The use of Safe Haven Baby Boxes across the United States has successfully secured the safe surrender and subsequent adoption of 52 infants since 2017. However, the incident in Blackfoot has sparked serious conversations about the need for more stringent oversight and public education regarding the appropriate use of these baby boxes.

Community and Law Enforcement Response to Incident

Local authorities and community leaders expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Kelsey voiced the organization's grief and determination to prevent such occurrences in the future by promising to continue educating the public on the legal requisites for using baby boxes. She made a point during a Facebook video update to clarify that the absence of cameras on the baby boxes reassures anonymity but also places a great responsibility on the system to rely on traditional policing techniques and community ethical standards.

The police have mentioned that additional charges are being considered as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, the Blackfoot community has been reassured that law enforcement and Safe Haven Baby Boxes organization are coordinating closely to ensure full transparency and cooperation with ongoing procedures.

Lessons to Learn from This Tragedy

1. Understanding Safe Haven Laws: It is crucial for residents to recognize that Safe Haven laws are designed to protect not just the abandoned infant but also the surrendering parent. These laws provide a safe and legal alternative to leaving a baby in unsafe conditions.

2. Importance of Reporting: If an infant has passed away, it is mandatory to report the death to authorities immediately. Failing to do so can lead to criminal charges, as seen in this case.

3. Early Intervention: Community members should be proactive in seeking and providing support for expectant mothers at risk of abandoning their newborns. Early intervention can prevent such desperate actions and ensure both the well-being of the mother and the child.

Remember, while these steps can help prevent similar incidents, crime can happen to anyone, and it's important not to blame victims who may find themselves in unimaginable circumstances.

Why This Story Matters

This case underscores the importance of clear communication and understanding regarding the use of Safe Haven Baby Boxes. It brings to light the need for preventive education and community awareness to safeguard all parties involved. Furthermore, it stresses the role of such installations in providing life-saving alternatives for babies, highlighting the community's essential role in supporting vulnerable populations.

In conclusion, the arrest of Angel N. Newberry after the discovery of a deceased infant left in Idaho's first Safe Haven Baby Box is a solemn reminder of the critical nature of these safe surrender sites and the legal and ethical obligations they entail.

As this case continues to unfold, it serves as a poignant example of the complexities surrounding infant abandonment and the continuous need for public awareness and proper use of lifesaving Safe Haven laws.
