Over 50 Evacuated From TN Hospital Roof Amid Flooding

In a dramatic response to rising floodwaters, more than fifty people were evacuated by helicopter from the roof of a h0spital in Tennessee.

Following torrential rainfall, emergency teams executed a daring rooftop rescue of 54 individuals from Unicoi County Hospital threatened with permanent closure, as KREX reports.

Friday morning began with dire circumstances at Unicoi County Hospital as floodwaters from the Nolichucky River surged, rendering road access impossible. By mid-morning, the escalating situation forced the hospital's administration to suspend all operations and prepare for evacuations.

Initial plans to transfer eleven patients to safer locations were quickly thwarted by the dangerous and fast-moving water levels around the facility.

As conditions worsened, the local Emergency Management Agency urged an immediate evacuation to the hospital's roof.

By 12:30 p.m., a group comprising patients and hospital staff, totaling 54, had assembled on the roof, awaiting rescue.

Drone footage broadcasted by Nexstar's WJHL depicted the alarming extent of the inundation and the stranded individuals atop the hospital.

Emergency Services Overcome the Elements to Save Lives

Helicopter rescue efforts intended to commence shortly after the group gathered on the roof were delayed due to high winds, which initially prevented flight safety. It wasn't until 2:50 p.m. that helicopters were able to approach the hospital safely.

Over the next two hours, tense rescue operations unfolded as each individual was airlifted to safety. By approximately 4:50 p.m., all 54 people had been successfully relocated to a nearby hospital, which remained operational despite the widespread disruption.

Throughout the day, Ballad Health, which operates Unicoi County Hospital, coordinated closely with the National Guard and state emergency crews to manage the crisis efficiently.

Meanwhile, elective surgeries at other facilities under Ballad Health were postponed, and numerous clinics and urgent care offices were shuttered due to the flooding.

Stark Realization of Loss and Community Impact

In the wake of the evacuation, Alan Levine, CEO of Ballad Health, expressed grave concerns about the structural integrity of the hospital. He labeled the facility, which is relatively new, as a probable "complete write-off," devastated by flood damage.

"The hospital has been engulfed by extremely dangerous and rapidly moving water," stated a Ballad Health release, highlighting the peril that led to the rapid evacuation.

Another release shared the urgent calls for prayers for everyone involved in the harrowing experience from the health organization.

Reflecting on the day's events, Levine shared a solemn message of resilience and thankfulness. "It’s just a building, we can figure that out later. I’m just thankful to God and everybody that our people are safe," he said, signaling a focused shift to recovery and rebuilding efforts.
