Tampa School Authorities Arrested Over Student Chokehold Incident

In a disturbing revelation at Progress Village Middle School, two senior school officials were arrested after a teacher allegedly assaulted a student.

A former teacher and an assistant principal were taken into custody following accusations of a chokehold assault on a student and subsequent cover-up attempts, as Fox 13 News reports.

On Jan. 18, Bennie Leverett, a 39-year-old teacher at Progress Village Middle School, was allegedly involved in severe misconduct by using a chokehold on a student, significantly hindering the student's breathing.

This act, it is alleged, not only posed an immediate danger to the student but also breached several conduct policies expected of school educators.

41-year-old Tashiska Fabian, who served as the assistant principal at the time, reportedly chose not to disclose the incident to the authorities or the child abuse hotline, which is standard protocol in situations involving student harm.

Subsequently, when Fabian discovered that a student had recorded the incident, she allegedly instructed the student to delete the footage in an apparent attempt to erase evidence. However, her efforts were in vain as detectives later managed to recover the deleted video.

Authorities Intervene Following Incident Report

It wasn't until nearly a month later, on Feb. 16, that the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO), along with the Department of Children and Families, made an investigative visit to the school.

The seriousness of the actions allegedly taken by both Leverett and Fabian led the school authorities to suspend them from duty in February. Fabian's misconduct resulted in her permanent dismissal, while Leverett opted to resign in March after his arrest on March 14.

Throughout this investigation, Hillsborough County Public Schools says it made it a priority to keep parents informed, promptly notifying all families about the development and arrest connected to the incident.

Community Reactions and Official Statements

Community trust was deeply shaken by these events, as expressed by Sheriff Chad Chronister.

"It is deeply troubling that a teacher would harm a student, but even more so when a person in a position of authority fails to do the right thing and report the crime. This is a complete betrayal of trust within our community. I'm proud of the witness who stepped up and did the right thing by reporting the incident, ensuring law enforcement could step in and bring justice for the victim," he stated.

The sentiment in the community has been one of shock and betrayal, with many calling for stringent accountability and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Why This Story Matters

This case not only highlights the breach of trust and safety within educational institutions but also underscores the importance of ethical conduct and the severe consequences of attempting to manipulate or hide misconduct.

It serves as a stark reminder of the role educators and officials play in shaping a safe educational environment.

The ramifications of such incidents are far-reaching, impacting students' sense of security, parental trust, and the overall integrity of educational institutions.

As this case unfolds, it will likely prompt discussions on policy reviews and renewed commitments to student safety protocols across the region.

Lessons to Learn

  1. Always Report Misconduct: Students and staff must report any incident of misconduct promptly to foster a safe educational environment. Reporting can prevent further harm and uphold the integrity of educational institutions.
  2. Respect and Responsibility: Educators are trusted with the care and safety of their students. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of that trust and the responsibilities educators carry every day.
  3. No Victim Blaming: It’s vital to remember, that regardless of precautions and security measures, crime can happen to any of us, and victims should never be blamed for the crimes committed against them.

In conclusion, the arrests of Bennie Leverett and Tashiska Fabian have laid bare critical issues about the safety and ethical governance expected within schools.

With ongoing investigations and discussions, this incident serves as an impetus for reinforcing the values of protection and integrity that are hallmarks of educational institutions.
