Bear Attacks Trainer During Circus Act In Russia

A startling incident unfolded at a Russian circus when a performing bear suddenly attacked its trainer during a live show, shocking hundreds of spectators, including children and parents.

According to a Fox News report, the event took place at the Moretti Circus, where a female brown bear named Donut turned on her trainer, Sergei Prichinich, in the middle of their act.

The bear, weighing approximately 490 pounds, was riding a hoverboard as part of the performance when it unexpectedly lunged at Prichinich. The attack lasted for about 30 seconds, during which time the bear pinned the trainer to the ground and snapped at him, creating a tense and potentially life-threatening situation.

Trainer's Quick Thinking Prevents Tragedy

Despite the sudden aggression from Donut, Prichinich managed to maintain his composure throughout the ordeal. His calm demeanor and quick thinking likely prevented the situation from escalating further. The trainer used a stick to protect himself from the bear's bites while waiting for assistance.

Nikita Mikhailov, the head of the Moretti Circus, praised Prichinich's handling of the situation. He explained that the trainer allowed the bear to express its emotions without panicking, which was crucial in defusing the tension. Mikhailov emphasized the unpredictable nature of working with animals and the importance of understanding their behavior.

A colleague outside the cage intervened by prodding the bear with a stick, which effectively distracted Donut and allowed Prichinich to regain control. This intervention was pivotal in ensuring the safety of both the trainer and the audience.

Continuation Of The Performance After The Attack

In a surprising turn of events, the show continued after the attack. Mikhailov described how Prichinich, once back on his feet, resumed the routine with Donut as if nothing had happened. He stated:

Towards the end of the act, the bear snapped at Sergei and wrestled with him. Their performance continued.

This decision to carry on with the show demonstrated the professional nature of the circus performers and their commitment to the audience. It also highlighted the complex relationship between trainers and their animal performers, where potential dangers are an ever-present reality.

Mikhailov further elaborated on the conclusion of the act:

The tamer waited for the bear to calm down, got up, continued the routine with her, sealed it with a kiss, and that was it – the show continued as usual.

Debate Over Animal Performances In Circuses

The incident has reignited discussions about the use of animals in circus performances. Russian animal rights campaigner Yuri Koretskikh used this event to call for a ban on live animal performances, citing the potential dangers to animals and humans.

Koretskikh argued that while many parts of the world are moving away from using animals in circuses, the Russian circus industry continues to resist such changes. He suggested that commercial interests are driving this resistance despite growing concerns about animal welfare and public safety.

The debate surrounding animal performances in Russia has been ongoing for several years. In 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a bill banning various forms of animal cruelty. However, this legislation did not specifically address the use of animals in circus performances.

Proposed Legislation And Animal Welfare Concerns

In response to growing concerns, the Russian Duma proposed a bill in 2023 that would ban the use of circus animals in the country. This proposed legislation, co-authored by Alexey Nechaev and Vladislav Davankov, aims to protect the welfare of animals involved in circus performances.

The bill highlights the need for stricter regulations and oversight in the treatment of animals used for entertainment purposes. It comes in the wake of numerous reports of animal abuse and mistreatment in various entertainment settings across Russia.

A 2022 report by the Russian Prosecutor General's Office revealed 116 cases of illegal use of animals and 48 cases of animal cruelty in a review of over 500 animal shelters. These findings underscore the importance of addressing animal welfare issues in various contexts, including circuses.

Why This Story Matters

This story highlights the ongoing debate about using animals in entertainment. It raises important questions about the ethics of circus performances involving wild animals and the potential risks to both humans and animals.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of wild animals, even when they appear to be well-trained. It also brings attention to the need for stricter regulations and safety measures in animal-based entertainment industries. This story prompts us to reconsider our approach to animal welfare and the role of animals in human entertainment.

Conclusion

A Russian circus performance took a dangerous turn when a bear attacked its trainer during a live show. The trainer's quick thinking and calm demeanor prevented serious injury, and the show surprisingly continued after the incident. This event has rekindled debates about animal welfare in circuses and has led to calls for stricter regulations or bans on animal performances in Russia.
