Ex-NFL Star Arrested for Disturbing Peace on International Flight

Former NFL offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus was arrested following disruptive behavior on a Delta flight from Boston to Dublin that forced the plane to turn back.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, the 40-year-old allegedly urinated on another passenger, causing the flight crew to request assistance from Massachusetts State Police.

The incident occurred late Saturday night when the Delta flight destined for Dublin, Ireland, had to be rerouted to Boston's Logan Airport.

State Police troopers boarded the aircraft at approximately 2 a.m. ET on Sunday to address the situation involving Cherilus, who had become uncooperative and refused to disembark.

Former NFL Player's Outrageous Conduct Disrupts Flight

Cherilus, who played for the Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his NFL career, was charged with disorderly conduct and disturbing a flight crew. The Massachusetts State Police provided a statement to the Daily Mail detailing the events that transpired upon the flight's return to Boston.

According to the statement, when troopers attempted to remove Cherilus from the plane, he became irate and uncooperative. Eventually, law enforcement personnel had to escort him off the aircraft and place him under arrest on the jet bridge.

The incident caused significant disruption for other passengers on the canceled flight. Delta confirmed that the remaining travelers were rebooked on a new flight scheduled for Sunday night, with an expected arrival in Dublin on Monday morning.

Delta Airlines Responds To Unruly Passenger Incident

A Delta spokesperson addressed the situation, emphasizing the airline's stance on passenger behavior and commitment to safety. The airline representative stated:

Delta flight 154 from Boston to Dublin on August 17 returned to Boston Logan due to an unruly customer and was met by law enforcement. Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful behavior and will cooperate with law enforcement to that end. We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travel.

This statement underscores the seriousness with which airlines treat disruptive passenger behavior and the potential consequences for those who violate onboard conduct policies.

Cherilus' NFL Career And Post-Retirement Endeavors

Gosder Cherilus, a native of Haiti, had a notable career in professional football before this incident. He was selected by the Detroit Lions as the 17th overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft after a successful college football career at Boston College.

Throughout his NFL tenure, Cherilus started in 116 out of 132 games for the Lions, Colts, and Buccaneers. His professional playing career came to an end following the 2016 season, during which he reportedly earned over $40 million, including a two-year $7 million contract with Tampa Bay in 2015.

Since retiring from football, Cherilus has pursued a career in real estate. He founded his own company, Bastion Companies, demonstrating his transition from professional athletics to business entrepreneurship.

Legal Proceedings And Potential Consequences

Following his arrest, Cherilus was scheduled for arraignment in East Boston District Court on Monday. The charges of disorderly conduct and disturbing a flight crew could potentially carry significant legal consequences, depending on the severity of the incident and any prior offenses.

The case highlights the serious nature of in-flight disturbances and the swift response from both airline personnel and law enforcement agencies in handling such situations. It also serves as a reminder of the strict protocols in place to ensure passenger safety and maintain order during air travel.

As the legal process unfolds, more details may emerge about the circumstances surrounding Cherilus' behavior on the flight and any factors that may have contributed to the incident.
