For the first time in half a century, a rare animal has been confirmed seen in southern Arizona, surprising conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

An endangered ocelot was recorded in southern Arizona's Coronado National Forest by the Phoenix Zoo's trail cameras, marking the first confirmed sighting in the region in 50 years, as the Daily Mail reports.

In April, the Phoenix Zoo initiated the Atascosa Complex Wildlife Study, employing trail cameras throughout the Nogales Ranger District. This investigation aimed to monitor wildlife patterns, particularly against the backdrop of the challenges posed by climate and human interference.

As luck would have it, an unforeseen discovery occurred in June. An ocelot, a medium-sized wild cat native partly to the southern U.S. and predominantly to Mexico, was captured on video by one of these strategically placed cameras. The footage required meticulous verification to confirm its authenticity and significance. According to Tracy McCarthey from AZGFD, “A pelage spot analysis was conducted, confirming that this filmed ocelot was a new individual, not documented before in Arizona.”
